There is no "right" time to buy stocks. Your strategy to make money investing should be to buy on a regular basis. It is called dollar cost averaging. It is the safest way to invest. You should also invest in a variety of stocks. If you do not have the funds to do this, it makes sense to buy into a mutual fund (index funds have low costs) and buy it on a regular basis.

Please speak with a broker , read a few books and understand what you are doing. Good luck.

I view the market from a shorter term perspective and I do NOT subscribe to the dollar cost averaging idea of investing. A good time to put your money to work is when the market is down a good bit. However, today's price action, and the price action over the last few weeks suggests that this market is starting a new leg DOWN within an ongoing bear market. When you see the market down nearly 400 points, there is a good reason, and that reason is negative. This price action is what we call unusual, and suggests lower prices are ahead. It is never good to try and catch a falling knife. Wait for the market to stabilize before investing any new money.

I am a pessimist.
I would wait till the Dow goes down 99% sometime in the next year or so. If the world is not destroyed by nuclear war then maybe then it would be time to buy.
The Dow will go from 125 to 135 in about 30 years.

Wait till it hits 11,700 or so. I think you will get the opportunity within 2 months from today, June 6, 2008.

I sold much of my mutual funds about a month ago, and am awaiting that level before jumping back in. I had initially set 12,000 but decided to lower the target after today.

Fear, gloom and doom is filling the air all around. Things will likely get worse - if a war between Iran & Israel happens, you can see the DOW go below 10,000 easily.
