Wal-mart is a good company. It is known as a 'consumer staple'. A consumer staple is a place that everyone shops at on a regular basis. EVERYONE shops at Wal-Mart for something, and many of their products are cyclical products meaning they get repeat business on the same product (shampoo's, soap, groceries in some, etc).
To the other poster: A death of an employee has absultely no impact on the price of thier stock. That death wasn't caused by poor business safety or somethign like that. It was caused by a lack of enough staff to controll the crowd, which can be blamed equally on the local police department as anyone else. And it's not like it was a massive cult slaughter or something. It was one employee out of 1.5 million employees...how significant of an impact is that? (not trying to be cold hearted about this, but seriously, look at it from a logical standpoint!) Wal-Mart has had lawsuit attempts and employee strikes and everything else thrown at them and they are continually growing. The bottom line is, as long as you have a cheap product that people need, people will buy it. Doesn't matter what the underlying business practices are. ESPECIALLY, when a country and globe is goign through tough economic times and money is tight. When people spend money with a company it increases profits, that means a stronger company, meaning more people will invest in it and the stocks go up.
It might not make you rich in the short term, but it's a solid buy and hold along with the Coca-Cola's, Johnson & Johnson's and all the other companies that low costing goods that people will always buy. Not a lot of people by generic cola for 75 cents when you can buy a Coca-Cola for a dollar. 25 cents is nothing to people. The only time generic is a big deal is if it saves people a ton of money either all at once (buying a no-name brand TV) or on a regular basis (buying generic medication), etc. There will always be a market for cheap stuff |

I think its great to invest in Wallmart but I would not expect to see large returns right away. This is one stock to buy and hold and it is pretty much recession proof. |

yes if you are looking for a profit |

It sure is....You can invest a little bit at a time if you don't have alot of money with DRP's - Direct Reinvestment Plans...go to wall-street.com and find a list of great companies that you can invest in without a broker. Walmart is on that list. It costs nothing...A few others: Pfizer; Bank of America; Citibank; General Motors; Ford; Johnson and Johnson; Clorox; Intel; and so many more...Take your choice. |

If you bought the stock WMT 8 years ago, the stock today will be worth the same.
I do shop there and I get good deals, but fundamental I see nothing great in this stock. |

Wal-Mart is a good corporation, but don't expect to make a hugh profit off short term buying and selling their stock. |

Walmart is about the only DOW 100 stocks that is profitable for 2008. It has far outperformed the market for 2008. With the ill economy it will continue to perform well. It is probably the best managed company in the USA. |

I don't know what your investment goals are,but if your looking for a good solid company you can't beat WMT.There won't be any large capital gains and they have a relatively small dividend. Be patient, try to buy at around $50.

No it is not and the death on Friday may make the market fall soon. Plus why would you invest now at the end of a suckers rally? Walmart may outperform the S&P 500, but that means instead of losing 60% like the S&P will, Walmart may only lose 20-30%. It is very clear to me that the DOW will be under 4,000 within' a year and when this happens WMT will go way down. It is 55 a share now and it would not surprise me if this stock is 45 by Christmas and then 30 by Christmas of 2009 if not lower. The economy has not collapsed completely let and we have much room on the downside yet. For truth on stocks, do a google search for either VISIONVICTORY or PETER SCHIFF
Have a good one my friend and if you want a winner, short this market. Going long is a suckers play |
