Invest in stock! search for quality stocks, research on their potential earnings growth, determine how much it worth (calculate intrinsic value), and buy them at discounted price (margin of safety).
If you'd found good stocks but no discount, be patient. opportunities come and go. don't rushed to the market just because you have the money. instead, let your money grow to the fullest!

If your budget allows, use it for a down payment on a house. That's probably the single best investment you could make.
If that's too long-term for your tastes, try a mutual fund or a money market account. Speaking with a financial advisor may be a good idea for you. Most will offer you free consultations. |

First. Make sure all your debts are paid. Life goes better without debt.
Second you didn't say which army because what you do with cash varies from nation to nation. The most valuable thing is to invest in real estate.
If you have no debt. Fresh out of the army . You like the town you are in. You got a line on a job. Use it as a down payment on a house. A local Credit Union or Bank can help. There is always benefits for veterans. |

You can't put it in a 401k but you can put it in and IRA Otherwise your going to pay income tax plus 10%. Once you roll it into an IRA there are a zillion investment choices but if your looking long term purchase a growth mutual fund. If this is all you have to invest go to t.rowe price. they have the best website for a novice or any investor to choose and investment. If your have additional funds 50k plus I would get a Financial Planner from a reputable company like Raymond James. They strictly manager personal assessts they don't own funds so they're not biased on the funds choices. |

Well, it's hard to answer this question because I'm not sure how long you mean and what you goal(s) is/are? So, the best I can do is to point you to some sources that might help you figure this out.
To get an overview of stocks, bonds, and mutual funds, check out these three sources:
1) Mutual Funds for Dummies, by Eric Tyson
2) http://www.invest-for-retirement.com has a free downloadable book
3) http://www.investopedia.com has some tutorials
To find a good provider of low-cost mutual funds, check out these two:
You may want to consider looking into a fund-of-funds, one that invests in other underlying mutual funds. This is an easy to way to acheive full diversification without having to buy the mutual funds peice-meal. I use them whenever they are available and I can find one with a stock to bond ratio that suits my needs. They are sometimes called lifestyle, lifecycle, asset allocation, or target-date funds. Both of the firms I mentioned above offer a variety of these. IMO, investing should be simple and involve little costs ... low-cost fund-of-funds are the best way to acheive this. |

Depending on which army you got out of, there may be no taxes on this income.
Assuming you are in the US:
Contribute to an IRA account, either Roth or regular (Army pay may not be allowed in one or the other) - your maximum allowable contribution will be less than $4K.
After that set up a safety net of 3 - 6 months of income in three 3-month term laddered CD's. This will make sure that you won't have to move out of an investment prematurely due to an unforseen cash need.
Pay off credit card debt.
THEN go find a financial advisor about investing in real estate or paper securities.
The above advice is what a financial advisor will tell you to do if you have not done it already. They will charge you a finanical planning fee to lay out this advice. |

Let me know if your interested in the FOREX market. The people who followed the freedomrocks strategy made 220% return on their money. That number is down a little this year but i think most are up about 60 percent so far. There is no guarantee of these rates. This program is amazing and the business side of it is also. There are people making 30k + a month already and its only been around for a year +. Perfect timing. Don't take my word for it though. Try it out with fake money for two week for free.
