La | Long-Term Assets Question? |
Is everything that isn't under Total Current Assets, Long-Term Assets? What ways or ratios can you use to tell that a company is capital intensive? |
|

C Brown
|
capital intensive is just sort of a generic term. There is no specific ratio that defines when a company is "capital intensive". The term basically just means that it takes a large amount of money to run the particular business. For example a car manufacturing company is capital intensive. You can't just start building cars from scratch until you have a huge factory and lots of people. That's capital intensive. The same thing applies to utilities, major airlines, oil refining, chemicals, etc. These businesses tend to borrow a lot of long term debt to finance the construction of their large factories (or whatever) and so most capital intensive businesses do tend to carry larger amounts of long term debt.
Companies that are not capital intensive include financials, software, most service businesses. Anyone off of the street can start a web-based business or an insurance sales business without much of any start up capital. |
