How much risk are you willing to take? If not much then bank account would be best investment, if you are willing to risk investing in the market then either mutual fund, or individual stock. All depends on your risk tolerance. |

Was the intent of this gift to have you invest it, or was it just a $100.00 check for the kid?
If it was just a $100.00 check, I would suggest that it should be spent on something the kid would appreciate - like toys or a baby swing.
If you seriously want to put it twoard college savings, look at opening a brokerage account with a target asset/allocation mutual fund. This fund should be something like "target 2025", meaning you intend to cash out in 2025. That's about right for his college years. However, if you do that, you gotta put some more money in...
