My employer offers a 403(b). They offer Tiaa-Cref and Vanguard. Which is better?
Also, I am only 22 yrs old, should I sign up for a retirement account now? Or should I just wait it out till the economy strenghtens?

Both are excellent choices.

TIAA/CREF manages a vast number of university and government 403b plans -- I'm surprised Net Advisor hasn't heard of them -- and offers a wide variety of interesting choices, some not available elsewhere. The downside is that some of their "annuities" are a little opaque in structure. (NOTE: TIAA/CREF calls some investments "annuities" that are not like annuities available elsewhere, their terminology is ... unique.) One of their real estate funds is also unique in that it owns properties directly rather than investing in real estate corps. But they also have plain old mutual funds.

And then Vanguard, of course, is one of the largest, most reputable mutual fund companies around with just about the lowest fees. Recommended for everyone.

If you can pick and choose between funds offered by both, that would be the best situation. If you have to pick all-TIAA or all-Vanguard, I would be tempted to go with Vanguard unless you just fall in love with some of those unique TIAA investments. If they only offer a few Vanguard funds, I'd evaluate the available choices very carefully before deciding.

At 22, I would start investing now and never stop. With your very long time frame, there is no point to postponing investing. I would, however, try to be as diversified as possible in selecting investments.

Now is the perfect time to do this. Go in now and profit from the strengthening over the next 20 years. TIAA-CREF is reputable, but I would go with Vanguard because they are reputable and known for charging the lowest expense fees in the business.

You should definitely sign up for the account now, especially if your employer is offering matching contributions. The earlier you start saving, the better off you'll be later. Also, stocks are dirt cheap right now, so your gains will be higher over time. Don't worry if prices drop over the short term, just keep adding more on a regular schedule.

It really depends on the funds in your 403B. However, I generally like Vanguard since it has the lowest fees in the business and has the most index funds.

Start investing now - the economy will have to turn around sooner or later. If your that worried invest your money into the money market fund if it's in your 403B. Good luck!

I would recommend Vanguard - generally lower costs and a wide range of funds.

Vanguard, by far. Considered one of the top mutual fund group in the market.

Net Advisor
Vanguard..

Never heard of Tiaa-Cref .

Dollar cost average pre-tax funds into the Vanguard S&P 500 Index fund, and wait 15+ years.
