Can you roll it over to an IRA? NO, not as long as you are still working there.

Can you roll it over to something just like an IRA to get more investment options? Maybe. But why?

They have a new instrument this decade called a "Self Directed 401(k)". The only reason to move to this is if you don't like the investment options in the company plan. The self directed is just like an IRA but under 401(k) rules that can be slightly different. I think it is up to the company whether they offer this. Mine does.

Many company plans have limited ways to invest and their management fees can be high. So it depends on your company's plan if you even want to do that.

Should you keep investing without a match? My answer is a little different than most but I think it is based on the numbers and good financial planning. It is all about taxes.

Retirement plans are tax deferred investing with pre tax deposits. That is what makes it all about taxes. If you are in a low tax bracket the tax benefit is less than in a higher bracket.

I figured that, other than depositing up to the match, I was better off investing my money in a taxable account to increase my income until I was in a higher tax bracket. Then when you get in to a 25% bracket or higher the pretax deposits to the 401(k) save you 25%, not the 15% you were taxed at earlier. At that time it is a greater benefit to you to deposit more, maybe max out the 401(k) in later years which you can do it you had invested your money earlier in a taxable account and have that extra income.

It is about paying the least taxes and if you are in a low bracket now you might as well pay taxes on it now if you plan to make better money in later years, as most do.

That works best to maximize tax savings imo. But it only works if you do indeed invest that money that would have been deducted. If you spend it instead you will be poorer in the long term.

So if you think you might not invest the money once it goes in your pocket you are better off letting them keep taking it out of your check before you see it.

Good Luck.

Yes and Yes. You are investing in your future. Whether they help out or not you still need this money when you retire.

If you are still working with them, then you should talk to HR and see what is going on!

If the company stop matching because of company's hardship, you can consider less your contribution for pre-tax purposes only. If you think you get a much better return on your own, you can stop the 401k all together and use a portion of the take home money and put it in a brokerage account.

Note that if you stop contributing to your 401K, your income level will be higher and taxes will rise as well. You are also taking a risk of investing on your own in this cash-strapped environment.

If you want to gain access to the cash in your 401K, the only way is to loan from it and pay yourself back in your contribution. so... if you stop contribution, you can't really loan out money.

As of right now, you can't roll over your account until you quit from your firm.

You generally can't roll it over while you are still employed, but I would max out a Roth IRA first.

Are they matching at all???

It depends, if they're matching at all. Thats basically free money they're giving you. In that case keeping on investing.

If not, that I would look into a well diversified Roth IRA.

Think long term not short term, this market it hurting right now, but its a great time to buy. "Remember buy low, sell high"

Everytime the market drops- thats everyone selling scared and cashing out their 401k's. Then in the next few days the smart people come in and buy it on the low. Thats how it works.

Bottomline, think long term and invest long term. If its not killing you to put money away. Keep on investing!

i think the 401 is a joke right now, lose money if you put it in stock and bonds or hardley gain any interest if you put it in the safe acount,, you work for fedex i bet.. they just quit matching it.

i quit investing in mine wish i could just get my money out of there, it aint worth crap and i lost about half of the money that was in there due to stocks crashing... what a waiste

yes you can roll it over in an IRA...an yes if your company is not matching your 401K then whats the point of having. I don't believe 401K's have interest (don't quote me on that though) so the whole point is for the your employer to match....that's your interest so to speak. so basically it's pointless at this point. AND REMEMBER ENRON...roll your money over NOW....seriously. The question you should be asking yourself is "Why ISN'T my company matching me anymore?" Would throw up huge red flags if i were working for that company.
