In the short term, put it in a money market fund (about 5% yield). Your longer term plans for it depend on your financial situation (ex. other income, debts, how close you are to retirement, etc.). The money market fund is moderate yield, safe and gives you some time to work with an investment councellor on the "asset mix" you want to have.
Ask the local banks about thier money market funds and take the one with the highest yield.
Here's a site to compare the online options: http://www.bankrate.com/gookeyword/rate/mmmf_highratehome.asp?params=US,416&product=33&pop=nopop&ec_id=GOOG_ag_mm_gen_ky_Broad_k_money_market
Also, if you have any high interest items (esp. credit card balances), use some of the $$ to erase these asap (before putting the rest in a money market fund). |

Talk to a Financial Advisor in the bank and they will be able to help you. Remember to ask about fees before you meet with them.
If you have no investment experience, you can always put it into a CD or money market |

everybodys got a mortagage, throw it in there..........and look at how much money is now going to interest and how much is now knocking off the principle.............thumbs up please |

$50,000 is not a lot of money - not these days. I THINK the very best answer myself and/or anyone else “worth his/her salt” would give you is:
Invest a little time and some money to sit down and consult an ***independent*** professional financial adviser and/or accountant - preferably a C.P.A. - who can provide professional advice to you. After you and the professional advisor determine what your expectations and goals are then make decisions.
SUGGESTION: DO NOT go to a bank or a broker.
***independent***: She needs:
1] the advice of someone who doesn’t have a biased or slanted opinion.
2] Someone who doesn’t have anything to gain but the best interest of his/her clients - and a small fee for his/her services.
3] THEN if you feel comfortable with that person and the advice he/she provided, you should make the decision to rely more heavily on that person’s advice.
Two last bits of advice:
1] You SHOULD ALWAYS be in a position to say, "No, thank you."
2] You should always be in a position to change advisers or consult others and make-up or change your own mind.
PLEASE DON’T FALL FOR ANY SCAMS OR SCHEMES. DON’T listen to that old, old story, “Today is the last day we can offer this discount.” OR “Today is the only day you can get it at this low, low price.” OR any language similar to that. BELIEVE ME, if its there today, it will be there tomorrow; next week; even next month; 3 months from now; 6 months from now; or maybe even next year. AND IF ITS NOT THERE, don’t worry about it.
Thank you for asking your question. I enjoyed taking the time to answer it. You did a great job - not only for your information, but for every other person interested in reading my answer. Thanks to everyone for reading my answer.
I wish you well!
VTY,
Ron Berue

my advice: put it in to a 6 month cd, and take the time to think
about what you want to do with it. Don't be pushed into making a decision before you are ready. |

you need to put some away. $50, 000 is not going to last long. i'd pay off all the bills and mortgage, and save the rest. you really don't sound broken up over the death. |
