I kid you not. When the dot.com bubble burst, between 2000 and 2003, on balance, I was miserable. When the gulf war started in 2003, I picked up, and have been on the whole, very happy ever since .... the mkts rallied, and have been riding high. Throughout the late 80s and 90s, I was always always happy. OK, I must say my girlfriend of 4 years dumped me in 2000, and I was fcuked up for a few years, and maybe I am just otherwise happy. But lately, even intra-month, I seem happier when the mkts are going up .... in May, I was unhappy (again, as an Arsenal fan I saw Chelsea win the league, which hurt, and went to Paris to see us beaten off by Barca). This is sub-concious, I have no money directly invested in it, and it's sort of noticeable back to childhood |

There is a paper that is about to be published in the Journal of Finance that shows evidence of stock markets being affected by national moods. In particular, there is a statistically meaningful drop in stock markets in a given country (other than the USA) on the day following that country's elimination from the Soccer World Cup (the authors ignored the US -- because we don't care about soccer).
So -- maybe it isn't you -- maybe it is everyone around you. |
