alwayswondering | My new employer matches 1%. Is it worth to invest there or open a Roth IRA? |
My previous employer matched 1/2 of what I contributed. I only put 5% of my pay. I have maybe $3,300? in it. My new employer only matches a whopping 1% of my contributions. I am not sure if opening my own Roth IRA is more beneficial in this case, or investing in the employers 401K. I believe I should be elegible in a few months.
I am also trying to save for a home downpayment and pay down $25k in student loans. It seems like I will never be able to achieve all of these goals (retirement, home and school loans), all while wanting to go back to college for a better career which is impossibly expensive on top of my outstanding loans. It's not like I make a lot of $... maybe $23k a year, and I am 24 if that helps any. :)
Any thoughts?
Thanks! Additional Details I also wanted to see what you all thought about mutual funds? |

Step 1. Pay off the student loan.
Step 2. save for the home down payment, but with only 23k in salary, the home might currently be beyond your reach. But the way prices are dropping they may not in the near future.
There are several conservative mutual funds available that would be good vehicles for saving for that down payment. One is the T Rowe Price Capital Appreciation fund. If you set up a direct withdrawal from your back account you can begin with $50 a month.
After you are snug in your new home then you can consider saving for retirement. You still have quite a lot of time for that.
Oh!! Don't go buying more house than you can afford like all those folks that are getting theirs repossed now. |

The matching is a 100% return on your investment. At least get that because that's free money. After that, go for the ROTH, espically if you think you may need the money before you retire. The nice thing about the ROTH is that you can take the prinicple (not the interest/investment gains) out at anytime without a penalty or paying additional taxes. |

Actually, you can bring home more money by contributing to your 401K, because your taxable amount will be lower.
Then take part of your bring home money, and deposit a portion of that in a Roth, or in CDs. |

if i were you, even if i decided to invest elsewhere, i would still put in the 1% into company 401k just to get the money the company is willing to contribute. seems like a waste not to. |

Are you sure its 1% of contributions or up to 1% of your annual pay? |

If they have a Roth 401k as an option, go with that. The match, even though small, will help tremendously in the long run. Most 401k's have a Roth option. |
