Northern Rock shares? Now they're under £1 per share, is this the time to buy or do I wait another week?

Remember Marconi? They went from £12 to 1p., and now Northern Rock are going down the same drain. There is likely to be a debt for equity swap that will wipe out present shareholders. Avoid.

If you wish to take such risks, don't buy until they at least start to go up.

Hang on, they dropped to 60p at one point this morning and have now risen to 80p. That's a huge gain / loss. You need to instruct a broker exactly when to buy and sell.

So tell your broker to buy at 55p for example, and instruct him to sell as soon as the shares hit 100p. Don't wait around for the shares to rise to 200p, which may happen when virgin makes its bid, or the shares may drop through the floor.

If you want to be sure, spend the rest of the week reading the news about NR and watch how it affects the share price; as soon as you feel you know which way the wind is blowing, then buy, as I said above.

Lastly, only invest money you're happy to lose.

Never chase a running woman, a falling knife or a falling share.

Wait until the situation becomes clearer.
