Joey B | Oil, Silver, Gold...all down!? |
Hey guys, I bought silver like 5mths ago and it's like at half the price I bought it at. Just wondering why all these commodities are dropping in value, can anyone explain this to me? |

You obviously bought at the height of gold. A lot of people did.
You will probably make your money back so hold on to it, and here's why:
1. Hyper Inflation: Gold and Silver are a hedge against this. With all the money Governments around the world printed out, it will cause some seriouse inflation, making precious metals go very high.
2. Supply is less than current demand for physical gold and silver. Believe it or not, you can hardly get your hands on actual gold. it's been that way for half the year, even prior to the "economy crisis." This fact will eventually catch up to the price. |

That is the nature of commodities, especially heading into a recession. If you dabble in precious metals, you're accepting the volatility that goes with them. |

You bought at the top.
I have tried to tell people why NOT to buy precious metals (see post history).
The reason why they are down:
1. Massive DE-LEVERAGING in commodities. (mass liquidation).
2. Stronger U.S. Dollar (drives down commodity prices. Commodities are prices in Dollars). |

Gold has not been gaining value over time. Its slowly been losing value. I don't think it has the same place in the business world that it once did |

And why did you buy this? Go look at what made it reasonable then, compare the criteria for now and you will probably have your answer.
Commodity prices are based on: demand for the commodity (at all levels, personal, industrial, and sentimental), supply of the commodity (including current stocks and production and future production capacity), and sentiment (all of those other mental valuations such as store of value, it usually goes up in these conditions, time of year, etc. others are buying or selling, etc.).
The difference between buying shares in a company and buying a lump of precious metal is that a going concern will potentially make more (or possibly earn less), so it could grow, while the precious metal has not changed (excluding the potential of factors like theft or damage because an earthquake crumbled the building and its vault, or such physical damage scenarios).
Prices are never etched in stone. Prices range all over the place. Prices are like the weather in Oklahoma (ala the Okie sage Will Rogers), "If you don't like the weather, wait a while, it will change." |

You chased past performance. Bad boy!
Here are some good investing principles:
1. Do not chase past returns. People that buy funds because they have done well in the past are doing exactly that.
2. Do not market time. Market timing is buying based on your (or your newsletter, or your TV, or neighbor's) guess about what is going to happen in the future. Even if someone knows something, you've already missed the boat. The price already reflects what you just found out.
3. Use index funds. Over time, index funds outperform actively managed funds, mostly because they do not have those high expense ratios. Some actively managed funds do beat their index, but the ones that do usually do not do so consistently. So why gamble? Use index funds. If you want to use a few actively managed funds, make sure that the costs are very low. Vanguard has some good ones.
5. Diversify. Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Own a mix of bonds, domestic equities (large, small and mid cap funds), an international fund and perhaps a REIT (Real Estate Investment Trust) and emerging market fund. Four to six funds is all you need. Know your risk tolerance and set up an appropriate asset allocation. Rebalance as needed.
6. Consider taxes. Use the least tax efficient funds in your tax-deferred accounts and the most tax efficient funds in your taxable accounts.

It's because the US dollar is gaining strength. These are commodities (Precious metals) some investors flee to when the dollar loses it's value. |
|

Clark Kent
|
Worldwide demand is down for almost all commodities and the price of gold relates to the value of the dollar. When demand for commodities declines they become cheaper and a dollar buys more so, in terms of purchasing power, the dollar vs gold favors the dollar.
It looks like the main thrust is deflation, but once the government turns on the printing press full-power in this bailout economy, the supply of dollars will exceed the demand just like an overproduced commodity and we will see inflation and rising gold and silver prices. |

People buy into commodities when it looks like the economy is tanking and won't recover. So the prices get inflated WAY beyond where they should be because everyone runs scared. 5 months ago everyone was scared from the failure of the investment firms and was dumping stocks for commodities.
As soon as the market start to steady, everyone dumps the commodities and the price falls back to where it should have been all along. You'll probably have to hold onto your position until we hit another economic crisis in 5-7 years (market has a recession typically about every 5-7 years) to recover your losses. Sell when the economy is really bad to make the best profits.
This is why they advise people to hold tight to their investments rather than cash them in and buy bonds, treasuries, and commodities. Because these things have little to no return in the long run.
Please tell me you didn't fall for those phony commercials about gold and silver :-/ |
