Richard A | Option trading? |
Hello everyone. I have been buying stocks for my portfolio for about 3 years now. However, for the past year or so, I've been hearing a lot about Options. Are Options for short term traders or long terms traders. Also, is there validity to all the hype? Would it be worthwhile to learn about it or should I just stay with stocks? I would appreciate info from anyone who has extensive knowledge. Thanks |

Options can be played for short -term [days], intermediate [weeks] to long-term [months].
I tend to be in the trade or position for a couple days to a few weeks.
You can trade longer term options, which are known as LEAPS [Long-term anticipated participation], but they usually cannot be bought for any longer than 2 years. Options expire or run out of time..
When folks don't know what they are doing or how to do things, they are just taking potshots.
Options give a trader leverage or "more bang for the buck".
To learn more about the world of Options, here's a free site, which virtually "spoon-feeds" traders about options:

Thanks for asking your Q! I enjoyed answering it!

Option trading is more time consuming and usually short term. I have never bought a contract further then two months out. I dont think most people do. The risk/reward for option trading is extremely high |

one Option contract offer the advantage to buy the right of 100 stocks at a prefixed price of the underlying stock at a redused price called the premium. So if you speculate that the price of a stock is going up you buy a call per exemplefor half a dollar and you hold it and at the exercise date either you exrecise it or you just loose the premium. there are a lot of strategies for it. call, put, straddel, strugel, so you have to learn it. the good thing you can make a huge profit I mean 200% 300% or more if you are in the money instead of making the 10% or 20% it depends for the periode that you want to hold the option. also big fund manager use it to hedge their position. |

There is a huge difference between options and equities.
If you buy and option and you are wrong, the value goes to zero on the expiration date, for a total loss. If you sell (write) and option, other than a covered call, you are facing a huge potential loss many times your premium received (in the case of uncovered calls, the loss is theoretically infinite) |

While some people purchase shares for capital growth,
others purchase shares for income generation. Some investors generally have limited financial resources so option trading can certainly be viable for someone looking to bring in instant cashflow, traditionally options aren't traded for more than a month although not always the case. I honestly can't say that I have "extensive" knowledge but I first found out about share options via 21st century academy which have some of the most amazing stock market techniques. If you wanna see the basic premise of how it works and the income generating potential you can visit http://www.free-dvd.com.au |

If you've been investing, you should also look into options.
and it would be very foolish on your part not to follow up
Other than maturity dates, there's no much difference trading option than trading equities. Options will be short term compared to equities,
For the most part, options are trading vehicles rather than investments.
There are some websites that cater to the professional as well as the novice. Look at zacks.com and schaeffer.net
Both sites have links to other sites that also will be benefical to you
Good luck |

option is short when you excercise it then sell when the contract ends if you bought it and keep it for more than a year its long then |
