Particularly bad time to major in Finance?
since high school i have always wanted to major in finance, I am now a sophomore with a major in Finance, i was just wondering if its going to be almost impossible to find high paying jobs in the finance world, due to all the major firms collapsing, and our generally poor economy. Thank you

I do plan to go to grad school and get my MBA, so i still have about 4 years of total schooling left

Actually, there will huge consolidation in this industry. There will always be a need for financial, experts. get your MBA. The landscape may change, however there will always be opportunity.

if you continue your education straight out of college, then i think you MIGHT miss the current finance crisis.
Unless you have some hefty experiences on your resume, getting a "high" pay job is pretty hard. Starting salary for graduated students is decreasing...so i would just be happy to even get a job in the bus/fin industry

I'm a CS graduate working in the largely unaffected IT industry. But from what I've learned from my friends, you will almost always have a better chance of getting hired by prestigious firms (though there are less of them now) if you get an internship during undergrad, work for a couple of years after graduation, then go for an MBA.

If you go for an MBA right after college, chances are you won't get into prestigious MBA programs, which usually demands impressive resumes, not just transcript. But, you don't necessaryily want to be a prestige-whor e like some people I know.

So, my suggestion is do a double major, maybe finance + math/econ, or econ + CS (what I did), see how the industry progresses, and get an internship if you can at a bank and see how you like it there, before investing your youth.

I am also a student of finance and I think not only by the time you graduate will the economy have corrected itself and be roaring again, but also if your education is worth a lick and you are somewhat dilligent than you should be able to make your own fortune with your knowledge and experience with financial instruments. That's my plan at least.

You'll have plenty of case histories available for your thesis work.

There are so many jobs out there that you can get especially after you get your MBA. Do not get discouraged. Highly qualified and educated people are always in demand. If for some reason you do not feel 100% sure this is what you want to do then do a minor. Just do not give up! Hard work pays off! You are on the right track!

It's time like these that need more 'good' financial managers.
