Paying taxes on money gained in the stock market.?
If I make $1000 selling stock in XYZ and reinvest that $1000 in ABC and ABC fails and I lose that $1000, do I still owe taxes on the $1000 gain from XYZ?

You can offset short term capital gains against short term capital losses when you file your tax return at the end of the year. You can also offset long term capital gains against long term capital losses.

You pay taxes on the net gain, of the shares you sell for the year.

There are 2 factors when considering tax on the gain. First is how long was the stock held. Anything one year or more is long term, less than a year.is short term. Then 2. what tax bracket you are in. Long term gain goes anywhere from 5-15% and short term is 10-28%.

There are so called "wash sale" rules where you sell stock at a loss then re-buy it within 30 days but this only applies to stock sold at a loss. There are also "like-kind" exchange rules for certain property but they do not apply to individual stocks or mutual fund.

So the long answer is YES you will pay some tax on the gain. Don't forget to include any fees or commissions when figuring the gain.

Yes. But you can take a tax loss on the ABC stock. You're talking about two different transactions.

Not if they occur in the same year.

If the account is a retirement account (IRA, 401k) then no. If it is a separate account then a qualified yes. You pay taxes on the gain - but if you sold the other stock and took a loss, you can deduct that against your gain.

You could offset the $1000 capital gain on XYZ with the loss on ABC, so effectively no taxes on the gain. You do have to sell ABC by the end of the year though, paper losses/gains don't count.

Derek (Steelers, SB champs)
You still have to pay the taxes on the gain from selling the stock the first time.

It depends what tax bracket you're in. If you're in lower than the 15% income tax bracket, then you'd pay 5%, which would be $50.
