Pandoras Pumpkin | Please tell me what a Mutual Fund is? |

Mutual Fund = Group of stocks, bonds, or other securities.
A "fund manager" uses the funds collected from many investors to purchase securities that match the fund objectives as outlined in the fund prospectus.
Mutual funds are less risky than individual stock because of the diversification aspects of the fund.
There are different types of mutual funds available (stock funds, bond funds, blended funds, etc.).
A good website is www.mutualfundplanning.com.
Also, you can request a fund "prospectus" from a funds sponsor (Fidelity, Vanguard, etc.).
The fund prospectus will give you the information you need to compare that specific fund to others that are available.
Most funds require a minimum initial investment of $1,500.00 to $3,000.00 unless the investment is through an employer retirement plan. |

The following definition has been taken from Investopedia. "An investment vehicle that is made up of a pool of funds collected from many investors for the purpose of investing in securities such as stocks, bonds, money market instruments and similar assets. Mutual funds are operated by money mangers, who invest the fund's capital and attempt to produce capital gains and income for the fund's investors. A mutual fund's portfolio is structured and maintained to match the investment objectives stated in its prospectus.
One of the main advantages of mutual funds is that they give small investors access to professionally managed, diversified portfolios of equities, bonds and other securities, which would be quite difficult (if not impossible) to create with a small amount of capital. Each shareholder participates proportionally in the gain or loss of the fund. Mutual fund units, or shares, are issued and can typically be purchased or redeemed as needed at the fund's current net asset value (NAV) per share, which is sometimes expressed as NAVPS. |

A mutual fund is a professionally managed type of collective investment scheme that pools money from many investors and invests it in stocks, bonds, short-term money market instruments, and/or other securities.[1] The mutual fund will have a fund manager that trades the pooled money on a regular basis. Currently, the worldwide value of all mutual funds totals more than $26 trillion. [2]
Since 1940, there have been three basic types of investment companies in the United States: open-end funds, also known in the US as mutual funds; unit investment trusts (UITs); and closed-end funds. Similar funds also operate in Canada. However, in the rest of the world, mutual fund is used as a generic term for various types of collective investment vehicles, such as unit trusts, open-ended investment companies (OEICs), unitized insurance funds, and undertakings for collective investments in transferable securities (UCITS). |

It is multiple stocks that you invest in. Sometimes your financial adviser will advise you to go with a group of stocks because they may feel it is a little more reliable in the long run. |

Just another way to lose money..
Seriously though, it's a way to invest in the Stock Market without buying shares in individual companies. The manager of each MF will buy a bunch of shares in all sorts of companies, in the hope that if one fails then the others might not fail.Sometimes a MF may lean toward one type of product e.g. it might be a "green" fund, or maybe Property (good luck on that one!). You as a customer may give say $1000 to the Fund Manager. This means you have invested in several companies but all in the one MF. They don't usually pay dividends to you but you should see your Capital (the $1000) increase over time (or decrease, as of now). |
