QUestion on the Stock Market?
this is just my opinion and im trying to see if its a smart move or not. The way i see it, the stock market is down a whole crap load. this means stocks are at an all time low. Would this be a good time to invest in the stock market? especially since the 700 billion dollar bill just happened? Im current not a stock holder and i think this is the prime opportunity to go in. Any advice?
Additional Details
im not going to invest a huge amount of money but a few hundred just because i dont have any stocks and i want to learn about it more and experience it

YOu could have wrote the same question in April, June, August, or Sept, and my answer would be the same. Each of these months the market had been sliding. Each time many experts said the market was turning around. Had you bought in April, you would have lost about 20% of your investment. Are we at the bottom now? If I listen to your logic yes, BUT with the passing of the bailout bill, the market still declined a pile of Friday. We are in a bear market right now. Bear markets generally last 9 -14 months. WE are at 11 months, so we should be near the bottom, but it isn't this week. Look towards Nov. and see if the market has reversed. You don't want to buy on a strong day or week, only to see us go to new lows.

Stocks are not at an all time low and it is probable that various sectors (auto, finance) may even go lower. Overall, the market is down and if you have the money and patience, it is probably a decent time to invest. Having said that, you will have to have an iron stomach cause there is a good chance the market will roller-coaster for the next few months.

Stocks are NOT at an all time low, but they are lower than they've been in years - at least most are. This is a good time to buy IF, you do not need the money for at least 5 years (we don't know when the market will turn around and it may go down further), you diversify in a mutual fund instead of an individual stock and you don't get out until the market turns around even if your money goes down in value. You need to stick with it.

If you are looking for the experience; few hundred $$ won't make a big dent in your life. So do it. But if you wanna know we are headed for a much deeper decline. Good luck!

Trying to time the markets top or bottom is not a good idea overall. I personally think the market will drop more. I think that the bailout is a stopgap measure at best. There are other issues that will drive the market down more. But that is just my opinion.

The generally understood best way to invest is to invest over time. It is called dollar cost averaging. If the market is going up you are making money and if the market is dropping, you are buying stocks at a lower price that will probably rebound. Also invest in an index fund not individual stocks. Something that tracks the Dow, Nasdaq, or another index. If you are a novice investor that is the way to go.

the market is down significantly over the last year.

before you purchase any stocks it is wise to research the company you wish to invest in, also research whether or not you want to go through a broker (i.e. Schwab) online (i.e. E*Trade) or if you can purchase directly through the company. keep in mind there are trading fees and tax implications whenever you buy/sell stock and some companies may charge you a fee to hold your stock (street name).

no matter what you are not guaranteed a profit, if the company you purchase stock in goes out of business, you've lost your money.

I feel it is important to stress Steve D's quote, "iron stomach"! You will need it beginning. I wish others had stressed this to me before I plunged into the market. But I'm not saying to not do it. Good Luck!

Well it all depends you do not invest in the stock market i hope you invest in stocks? You can find massive bargains right now in many stocks so yes this is a great time to get in.. gold is very cheap so look into it..
