TarHeelFan | Question about oil prices? |
With all the turmoil right now, like:
-The oil problems in the Gulf States
-Tensions with South Korea/North Korea rising
-Israeli problems
Why aren't oil prices skyrocketing? Doesn't oil historically go through the roof in times like these? |

Crude oil inventories have been increasing for over four months. We have almost 10 percent unemployment. Increasing supply and low demand means lower prices. |

The consensus reasoning ( which I do not agree with ) goes something like this....
The present financial contagion will cause a slowdown in the US economic recovery.
It will cause the European economies to be down for a lot longer.
Even China will see a slowdown of economy because the Western World will not buy as many things from them.
So, if all the world's economies are going into the tank, people will use less oil - remember, oil is used not only for transportation, but in manufacturing, agriculture, and many other industries.
So, if less oil is used, the price of oil will come down, and therefore oil and oil stocks are trash right now.
That's the reasoning.
Now, I find it hard to agree that the economies of the world will go down to such a low point that people will drive less, and will eat less ( unless they have no choice ). From history, the world's economies have always rebounded back from severe crises situations. So it will be with this particular instance.
If oil becomes cheaper, people WILL drive more, count on it. Large cars will be used, and longer road trips will be taken. People will fly again if airlines reflect cheaper oil in their fares.
And - oil WILL bounce back again.
The main reason why the events you have listed are not affecting oil is because the European crises is currently taking center stage - all eyes are focused on it, and the other stuff is not newsworthy. Even the oil spill - I would have thought it would stabilize the price but no, oil continues to go down.
But it will rebound again one day. That is why my investments are top heavy in oils and commodities. |
