Absolutly not! The company can't force employee's to get direct deposit. Some people are not able to open an account at a bank. I have direct deposit and I love it. I never have to worry about it not showing up in the mail on time. Some of my co-workers don't. They occasionally have late checks and when they call about it, they are usually told to get direct deposit and they wouldn't have that problem. |

Many banks charge higher fees if not set up for direct deposit. Direct deposit makes things easier and most banks don't charge fees for it. For example bank of america has fees but if you get paid by direct deposit they dont charge monthly fees. As far as legal questions I wouldn't ask about legal issues on a yahoo answers board from some stranger you never met, and never will. Save the important legal stuff for folks you can trust. :-) folks you can see and look in their eye. |

I know some government agencies require direct deposit as a requirement for employment. |

No it is not, you can't work someone for free.. HOWEVER.. if it is "now" company policy to have DD... you need to open a FREE checking account using your DD slip.. and it will all be ok.. It's a lot easier then waiting for them to hand you a piece of paper. My husband hates it.. but hey.. this is the future of money. It is all going the DD way. |

No. That is not legal. You should look at the federal posting signs they are legally required to provide to you regarding pay days. |

I'd get a bank account especially for it. Honestly DD is so much easier than paper checks and I've never had any problem with DD. As far as the legality of it, I don't know. Most laws on these issues are state based. For example I live in OK and employers can't force exsiting employees to receive pay via DD, but can force new employees to do so. I would say call up a lawyer and ask them, most will answer questions like this for free. |

Just my opinion

I would go to the County Courthouse where you reside and visit the State Prosecutor's Office. Refer your question to them? |

Can't wait til 6/13/09!!

No, it's not legal. All companies are required to pay their employees!! Also, they have to provide an alternative to direct deposit, because not everyone can get a bank account (due to their age, poor credit, bad banking history, etc) |

i dont think its legal. did you sign anything that says you need a bank account to get paid? i suggest, that if does not pay you, you should complain to the labor department and get him in trouble |

No its not legal at all. They are jsut trying to scare everybody into going the DD route. If i was you i would say no and keep a careful documentation of every single hour you work, as if they refuse to pay you then you could sue and make enough to retire for the rest of your life.
Your welcome. |
