History shows us that recessions and bear markets can last for several months to several years. During this time, the markets experience cycles of ups and downs. People may confuse a "temporary" bottom (such as what we are in right now) with "THE" bottom.
Which, of course, would be a large mistake, if you are a passive investor.

I don't think we're at bottom yet. We have a lot of ARM's still to reset in the the next two years and a lot of inventory to work through. It does seem that the labor market is holding steady though which is huge. That should help make this recession more mild and quick. The big question is when all these taxpayers get these checks in June what are they going to do with them? If they pay down debt or bills it won't help at all. If they take it to the mall and spend it, it will help. |

what are you talking about, the economy?
if it is the economy, keep your eyes open...what the fed does to revitalize the economy usually lasts for a short time...besides, the recent shock treatment done has only helped the US economy very little. We are definitely headed into a recession (bottomed), the question is when and for how long
p.s- any macro-scale treatment done by the fed is basically sugar pills...they give investors a false sense of security...which in itself is really important, because about 70% if the value of the US dollar depends on the people's faith in the currancy and the tides of supply and demand |

prior to yesterday most analists thought that we had anoather 8-10 months before any srious signs of recovery.
I wouldn't get into anything too deeply at this point. I think it's still too touchy. |

Possibly, but I don't think so. Since nobody can tell when a bottom is happening, now is a good time to make good use with some of the cash on the sidelines. Work it in gradually in the next few months to buy cheap. Long term investors have a great opportunity now to buy, tweak the 401(k) and add positions. A year from now you will be rewarded and the market will be climbing to new heights. What is happening now is overdue, normal, and the pain before the healing. Just what serious investors really need. |

I don't think we're out of the woods yet. However, we need to keep our eyes wide open. There very well could be some great buys. |

Apple, remember that the stock market and the economy are related but are two different animals. Market tries, and I emphasize tries, to predict where the economy will be 3-9 months out. The market is a discounting mechanism taking all available info and drawing conclusions based on the available data. Its not perfect but does an ok job overall. This is why news can have such an impact changing expectations very quickly. Historically the market will begin to turn down before a recession or slowdown begins, and the market will also bottom well before a recession ends. See if you can find a chart that shows recession (beginning and end) imposed over a stock market chart. The market will hit the low's when there is the most negative news, that is where there will be the fewest number of buyer and most number of sellers, (think contrarian) the average Joe will be dead wrong 95% of the time.
The market may, may have bottomed, for at least the short term, but the economy may languish for several months longer. Your question was clear to me, not sure what the confussion was for so many. |
