find out what funds are available to invest in. Then make sure each has a 10 year track record you can see profits, then diversify the money in at least 4 different directions growth, growth and income industrial and over seas for example.
Good luck
Also if you have a corporate match then invest all you can as that is free $$ |

what golfer said. plus a little more.
Key things to look at in the different funds are:
1) expense ratio. Lower the better. Less than 1.0 is good. Anything much higher than that is bad.
2) Long term performance. Don't just look at the past year as that has been bad for just about everybody.
Edit:
and don't get scared off. Starting your 401(k) is very important. The earlier you start in life the better. Every year makes a huge difference. Putting in 2000 a year for 8 years from 18-26 and then never putting anything in again will make you just as rich as if you start at 26 and put 2000 in a year for 39 years until you retire at 65. |

Read "Investing For Dummies." Its an excellent starter book for understanding the basics on different investments. Well worth the $15 or so it costs. |

A couple of more things. The tax deduction limit for 401k's is $15,500 per year. Find out how much of your contribution will be matched by your employer and invest at least that much to get the full match; however, if you have credit card or student loans, you might want to consider paying those down before you increase the contribution to your 401k.
You should get a list of the fund options. Look them up (they should give you the symbols) on Yahoo Finance and get the Morningstar ratings. Look for funds that have 4 or 5 stars. Most plans will try to offer several differnent categories including a stock offering, bond offering, money market, international, index or target retirement date fund. Be warned that some Fund sponsors like to put their worst performing funds in 401k plans because they know that they have a captive audience and no one is investing in these bad funds outside of their 401ks.
Don't go overboard with the diversification. Since you are young, you don't need a stable value or money market, unless you want to wait a few months until the market settles down. The rates are too low on these funds. I would try to include at least 15% of your 401 contribution in some international component.
Do some reading and learn about investments. |
