There is a difference between short selling the conventional way and "naked" short selling. In conventional short selling, your broker agrees to "loan" you shares of the stock you are shorting. How that protects the market is, if the broker doesn't have enough shares in their portfolio to cover your short position, they won't let you do it. That limits the amount of short selling.

Naked short selling does not require that there be actual shares to cover the short position. So, if a lot of people are short selling, they can destroy the price of a stock by selling more shares than there are available to buy.

Naked short selling is another example of how greed has led unscrupulous investors to carry out highly leveraged investments that, if they are successful, will make them a ton of money - but if they go bad, the market suffers and the crooks doing this go out of business.

In shorts selling you borrow something that doesn't belong to you, pass it on, get it back a bit later at a profit, and then give it back to the original owner.

That's pretty much what banks do with our money, isn't it?

That said, I lost five grand on my Halifax shares thanks to the spivs, and I have to agree it's a worthless way of making a living - you're not making anything, providing a service, or even investing in people who are trying to build up a business - so I don't mind the ban at all!

the stock market works because there is always two-way trade, unlike a shop where it is just one way. When you buy shares you have a period to settle, usually 3 days although this can be extended. Therefore when you buy you may not have all the money to pay for the shares, especially if you are geared. Likewise when you are selling you have a period before you have to deliver the shares. If you are short you have to buy them back, whether up or down.
Compare this to a farmer with a field of corn. Hopefully the corn will grow and ripen in a few months time. If the farmer thinks the price will decrease by the time the corn is ready he will sell forward. This is basically short selling as 1. he cannot deliver yet and 2. the crop may fail.
Remember you don/t get paid until you deliver the stock.
Having said that it should be, and probably is, illegal to perpertrate and spread malicious and false (but plausible) news about a company with the purpose of getting the share price down.

There is nothing wrong whatsoever with short selling.
People are forgetting that if stock increases, you lose money.
Also stock can only fall to 0 limiting the money you can make, but they have potential to rise indefinately.

Most short sellers are trading on there belief that markets are failing.
If you ban it, they will invest in gold, and remove there money from the financial system entirely.

You do not sell something you dont own, you borrow the stocks, and pay a dividend to the lender.

Short selling has been demonised, but they are a sympton of stock market decline NOT the cause.

hmmmm.......!
ya, me to, but it sounds like to many spoiled rich kids are addicted to the teat of Wall Street Trading, as in Naked Short Sell Trading~!!!

i see no reason for them to let it continue on, but i am sure someone on here will tell us~!

This can be said for buying stocks as well. You have stocks that go from $10 to $100 in less than a month. But yet, we're all OK with that. I believe shorting is a natural part of the market. But of course, any abuse to it will raise some eyebrows.

Happy Trading,

I believe short selling has it's place. For instance, maybe if more investors were short selling Washington Mutual, Merril Lynch, AIG, Bear Sterns, Lehman Brothers, etc. a couple of years ago, maybe management (at those companies) would have taken a 2nd look at what they were doing.

Maybe they would have asked themselves why is our stock being shorted?? What is it these short sellers see that we don't?? I'm not saying it would have changed their mind, but it might have caused them to reassess their strategy.
