SubConCents | Shorting stocks for the first time? |
I just opened an account with Scottrade and I wanted to know how I could short a stock? I am fairly new to this, so any information would be helpful.
Thanks in advance for any answers. Also, if you have any stocks that may be worth shorting, do include them. Additional Details Wow Hanzo, I was actually considering shorting LVS - I really think they will go bankrupt looking at their balance sheet, and how Adelson "loaned" the company money instead of buying more stock. |

I would assume that since you just opened your account and are asking this question that you have no experience trading stock.
Log on to your account.
Locate "Education Center" on the left side of the screen and click on it.
When the next screen comes up type "short sell" in the search box and click on "Go".
Click on each of the following items one at a time and read them:
Short sell maintenance requirements.
Shorting stock.
Sell short.
BE VERY,VERY CAREFUL!
Do not let yourself get caught in a short squeeze situation.
I am not suggesting that you short stock but if you want to know how to accomplish a short sell this is how.
Log in to your Scottrade online account.
Click on Trade at the top of the screen.
Enter the following information:
Sell short
Number of shares
Stock symbol
Order type
Duration
Review your order to verify that you typed in the correct information.
Send the order to Scottrade.
When you are ready to cover your short position do the same except enter "buy to cover" instead of sell short. |

<<<I just opened an account with Scottrade and I wanted to know how I could short a stock?>>>
1. You cannot short a stock from a cash account. It must be a margin account.
2. The account must have sufficient assets to meet the margin requirement before you will be allowed to short the stock,
3. The brokerage must have shares available for you to short the stock.
4. With the SEC restricting short selling on some stocks recently some brokerages are putting additional restrictions on customers shorting stocks. You will have to check with Scottrade to see what restrictions they may have.
Assuming you can short a stock, you might want to read some of the information abourt selling short on the Motley Fool site, such as

You do understand that if you short a stock that many other people are shorting at the same time, your losses can be many times what you can make? Specially if you have not really borrowed the stock you are shorting and are doing naked short selling.
Like everyone is shorting Ford and GM right now. |

when a stock is shorted your broker is responsible to borrow the stock before putting on the position. not you.
if everyone is shorting a stock at the same time, you will actually do well since the stock will be falling from the selling pressure.
The danger lies when everyone tries to cover (buy the stock back). If there is a large short position in the stock and everyone wants to cover at the same time it will blast off and you may not be able to cover quick enough.
remember that when you buy a stock and sell it as most do, the total maximum loss is the stock price. When you short, there is no maximum loss since in theory a stock can continue to rise.
Good Luck! |

With trade king (I don't really like it, but stuck with it) you need to keep a balance of 2k to have a margin account. I was shorting CAL around $19 and only made $1/share after I covered, only to chase the next big thing- CAL went to $11 this month. I also shorted LVS with a small portion of money, I got wiped out because the price doubled and Trade king forced me to sell; since it was so small I wasn't as hurt. I was more sure of CAL going down. Long story short, prioritize your trades, have money management and have patience- making profits is better than a negative. |

You should be able to make a very large amount of money. The market is currently valued at 4900. So I see a 50% decline due to a very large debt that cannot be paid back. I made $300,000 in profits this year by shorting. |
