James C | Should I buy Iraq dinars? |
I 'm looking for the pros & cons of purchasing Iraq dinars |
|

If you are going to buy...just think of it as purchasing a lottery ticket, not an investment. Don't spend much on it.
Pros: the currency could appreciate and be worth more than your purchase price
Cons: it doesn't appreciate, or declines, and you're out possibly your entire purchase price.
There's really nothing more to it than that. The IMF (International Monetary Fund) has the dinar fixed at 1187 dinar per US $, and there is no set international exchange rate set yet, so it is not tradable (in the "real" markets).
If you buy online, shop around, prices vary considerably, and try not to get ripped off (with fake dinars).
Again, think of it as a very long-shot gamble, not an investment. Only spend what you can lose without it being a big deal to you. |

Umm right now the paper they are printed on is worth more. I have some from a U.S. soldier who was stationed in Iraq. He thought they would be worth something eventually. Not so far. But if you want to buy mine -- then I think it is a great idea. LOL! |

Can't think of any pros. Plenty of cons - how about the country is in a mess and is full of foreign armies? |

Iraqi Dinars are being bough by inexperienced investors who have been "sold" on the concept of great financial growth. Experienced investors won't go near this stuff. even highly experienced currency traders won't go near the Dinar.
Do you know what everyone else knows..... have you been given the special secret...... I don't think so.
Take 5-10 years to learn investing before you consider something as speculative as this. |

Judging by the number of pitches I see from Web sites flogging the new Iraqi currency, not to mention dozens of people on eBay, there are at least some people out there who think investing in the Iraqi dinar that was introduced last October makes sense.
My take is unequivocal. Given the difficulty of predicting currency movements, I'm not even a big proponent of investing in established currencies like the euro or the yen.
And when it comes to buying and selling the fledgling currency of a fledgling government in one of the most chaotic parts of the world, that goes beyond mere speculation. I'd call it gambling.
The main argument for buying the dinar, of course, is that Iraq has vast oil and natural gas reserves at a time when energy prices are climbing. If the country gets its political act together, it could profit in a big way.
I hope things work out that way, but it's a big, big if.
And even if it does, there's no guarantee it will be able to run an economy that keeps inflation -- a major risk for currency values -- under control.
Fact is, it's the economic prospects for a country that determine the future value of its currency, not the price it trades at now or the price it traded at in the past. And no matter how low a value a currency reaches, it can always go lower!

I would only invest in Iraqi currency with discretionary money that you can afford to lose. The pros and cons are pretty straight forward - If the government can achieve social, political, and economic stability the price of the Dinar has a good chance of increasing in value, even dramatically. Or continued instability could lead to runaway inflation causing the Dinar to become worthless. You are risking losing all of your money, but it is no different going to Vegas.
Good luck - don't invest what you cannot afford to lose in this type of asset. |
