Curious
Should I continue my 401k even through these tough economic times?

Yes, you certainly should. But make sure you look at your portfolio and talk to your broker about your level of risk and where you might be able to move your money around. I'd play it safe in this schizophrenic market, by keeping your risk low at this time. But, don't take your money out. 401K plans are for the long haul, and the market will eventually even out. (Do move your money about, keep risks low for the time being).

In general, now is a great time to buy. But all investment questions should include your risk tolerance and time horizon. If you're a long time from retirement (no one can forecast the future, but I'd say 10+ years) and can deal with some +5%, -12% weeks for a while, I'd suggest you INCREASE your buying and shift more to American blue chips.

They're basically on sale right now. Add in any company matching funds and the tax free compounding of you're dividends and you could really build that nest egg.

It is about the best time to buy stocks in the last 10 years. That doesn't mean they will go up soon or not go down in the next year or so.

But it is the best for people that have a long time frame.

This is terrible for people retired now and living off of their stock investments.

And if you are concerned the market will fall further you can have your 401(k) go in to a money market until you think it is safer. But you should continue the deductions.

You can never get back the ability to put that money away pre-tax if you stop.

U should have an emergency fund in case you are laid off, and you should make a priority of paying off credit cards or other high-interest debt. if you have a handle on those things, then u should keep putting money in your 401k.

Derek (Steelers, SB champs)
Yes. Buy low, sell high. This is the best time to invest in the markets.

You should always invest in your 401k, no matter what the economy is like in the present. And you should maximize your contributions every year. You just need to keep your portfolio balanced according to your risk profile. Never invest for the long term with a short term perspective.
