Should I contribute pre- or after-tax dollars to my 401K Plan?
I am 28yo earning $45K and investing 6% of my gross income to a company-matching 401K Plan. I signed up for after-tax contributions thinking that it would be better to pay taxes now vs. ten years from now when I'll be in (hopefully) a higher income bracket. I've considered, but don't know, to use some of these monies in three to five years to invest in real estate. Now I am questioning that move after reading information about pre-tax contributions. Which option is better now and in the long run? Can I change my contribution to pre-tax if that is more beneficial even though I already signed up for after-tax?

You are better off contributing pre tax $. You will not be paying tax on this until you start taking money out. You definitely don't want to do that before age 59 1/2 or you will get socked with a colossal penalty that will kill your earnings. Think of a 401k as long term savings and start a different type of savings for your short term goals. I wish I started saving at 28 and did not touch it. Use a financial software and figure out how much you will save by age 60 if you keep investing at your present plan - you will have a bundle. Good luck

If you contribute only after-tax dollars, you need only pay on the interest earned when you receive pay out. Whereas, if you contribute only pre-tax dollars, you pay on both interest and contributed dollars at pay out.

I did pre tax on 401K which came out before any taxes. I didn't have the option to do the other. If I did I would have done it the way you are. Because later down the road Taxes will prolly be higher then they are now and I will be paying more to the government then what I am now. I do not think I would change it. There are many options when investing in real estate, but not to many to secure your future when your an everday joe making 45K a year. Ask a financial advisor for advise at work. Our 401K rep would help us with these decessions for free. Heres something else to consider too, look at the dollar value and how it is dropping. You might mention that to your financial advisor and see what steps to take to make sure if there is a crisis youre going to be protected.

For a tradition 401K you should definetly contribute with pre-tax money. It reduces your tax burden. In either case you will pay taxes when you withdraw from your 401K. Keep in mind if you withdraw funds for what you propose, you will need to set-up a payment plan to replace the monies removed, otherwise it will be treated as an early withdrawal and you will pay penalty fees and taxes at capital gains rates accordingly. Hope that helps. Check out the IRS' website for additional info.

Pretax for your 401k, after tax for a Roth IRA

max out your 401K to the point of where the company matches with pre tax dollars and then contribute to a Roth.

i think it best to set down with a financial advisor who knows the ins and out of these plans. some 401k's only allow you to pull for emergencies then have stiff contingencies to enter back in to contribute. you can make an appointment to sit with an advisor it does not have to be a long term committment. have a list of your questions already made out to make the best of your time and do some research on your own ahead of the appointment. also make a list of your financial goals.

401k is only pre tax contributions. IRA accounts are after tax
