Should I diversify my stock portfolio?
A stock represents ownership of a business. Buying stock is the same as buying a business. Why should I own more than one? If there were five business for sale in your town surely you wouldn't buy them all to spread your risk.

If you put all your eggs in 1 basket, you will either sink or swim greatly.
If you diversify, if one company or industry suffers, the rest of your portfolio usually remains intact.

Nick Z
One of the most famous and the most succesful investors, Warren Buffet, once said basically the same thing. The most successful investors he has known got their success by investing in fewer than four stocks.

Greater reward = greater risk. If you're willing to put all your eggs into one basket, thats your business. Why are you asking here?

piet lul
good idea.

$so fresh so clean$
No one said to buy all five, but it would be worth looking at buying at least two of them if possible.

A diversified stock portfolio is always good advice to protect the downside. Technically you do own a share of the company but realistically you don't. Buying a stock is not the same as buying a business. Some public companies do not have the shareholders interests held in the highest esteem and some do. Some stocks are downright shady and the people behind them get rich and you lose your money. The value of stocks should be based on the value of the company but emotional political, business and other news can under skew a stock value too quickly. The damage is done usually before the amateur investor finds out. Diversification is best.
Most honest companies try to maintain value in their stock but they are only limited to posting what the company is doing financially and forecasting company news. If you are investing under $1000 do not worry about spreading it around so much...just pick a good company. When you have more money to invest, find another good company. Another option is a mutual fund company that is run by a professional. They invest in several stocks to protect their investors (you). Look up on the Internet the top 100 mutual funds for 2006. Do it again in a month for 2007 and see the changes. Good luck.

Its considered incredibly irresponsible NOT to diversify...BUT, I agree with you wholeheartedly.
I am willing to accept the risks of the decline that encompasses putting all my eggs in one basket. But I would rather ALL of my funds be focused in one fireball than spread out amoung 4 others...it weakens my returns.
If I wanted to play it slow, I would invest in a stupid mutual fund!!!!
