Invest in mutual funds and be long termed. No one can time the stock market exactly. Trying to do so is pure gambling.

Wait for the market to tank another 5%. Then start buying.

There are indications that the current bull market might be over. The Dow broke through the 50 day moving average and has not recovered. That in itself is not conclusive, but it does give one pause for thought.

With that said some stock look attractive for the long term but may cause you to loose sleep during the next several months or even longer.

If you can not resist buying at these levels, just take one or two nibbles but be prepared to expect to loose money on them during this year.

you can try money market. it doesn't get affected by the market directly. It has a standard price per share. It is for long term investments and most likely there are profits.

It depends on how much money you are looking to invest and for how long.

The BEST time to invest is when the market is down. So, it is wise to think about it. Of course, you always need to be cautious, and avoid putting all your eggs in one basket. Diversify your portfolio, including international stocks as well as American. And don't feel as though you need to dump all your money in at once. Ease in at a pace you're comfortable with.
