dan G | Should I pull my $ out of stocks as soon as I can? |
With this recent turmoil in the stock market, my portfolio has taken a huge beating, almost a 6% loss this week alone! I am only 30 years old and still have much time for it to grow.
Should I shift the balance of my portfolio, or will the market pick up and recover some of my huge losses this week? |

I'm a stock broker and cannot even guarantee that the market will go in one way or another. It will definitely fluctuate.
However, due to the recent downturn, I'd be buying stocks at this time. If the market goes up a mere 7.5% over the next 5 years, it will be above 20,000. If it rises at a 12.5% rate of return over the next 5 years, it will be above 25,000. After that five year span, I get nervous about the market. I get afraid when everyone is greedy, greedy when everyone's afraid. People aren't greedy now so I am not worried. They were greedy in 2000 and that's why at that time, I ditched at 16.
You've got to have money on the sidelines to invest when the market goes down. As Jim Cramer had said, no one ever made a dime panicking. On the other hand, a good strategy on average is a passive investing strategy in which you are fully invested at all times in index funds. It's just noise. The down market is noise and shouldn't be listened to in my opinion. There will be plenty of these corrections throughout your investment career. You will get used to them.
Good luck. I wish you well in succeeding in the market. Take care. |

You have to have the self control to let it stay where it is. The market goes up and down but if you sit tight it will come back |

Sit tight, you will prosper eventually. Good luck! |

The future, by definition, is unknowable. The cost of superior long-term gains is short-term volatility. Quit trying to time the market... |

Over time this will look like a small blip, so don't sweat it. However there's not much upside at this time so it may be wise to sell completely out and wait for when they are cheaper. |

Don't Panic!
If you still believe that your current investments have good long term prospects, just ignore the market for a few days.
You might also consider buying into stocks that have been severely beaten down.
Don't do anything that you wouldn't do if the market hadn't dropped. |

It depends on what stocks you invested in.
There are stocks that are protected from bear markets and stocks that go with the bull market.
The sell off is due to the declining real estate market and it is going to take a long time to fix. That in turn leads people to fear investing in stock futures.
If the economy is healthy so are your investments.
If you believe that in a year or more from now that the U.S. economy will be strong then do not pull out your money.
In my opinion I do think there is a strong chance that the economy will get stronger once we get a change in the U.S. office. Once we concentrate more on the economy instead of the war I think the economy will start picking up.
There is also a strong demand in overseas investments like China. With China's 11% increase in GDP this year it will be interesting to see what happens when the Olympic Games debuts in Beijing. |

I would not suggest selling. A lot of people get scared and sell when stocks go down and get excited and buy when stocks go up. This is the worst strategy.
If you plan on investing long-term a good way to hedge against losses is dollar-cost-averaging which is investing a certain amount constantly. This way you will buy when prices are low and high. For most investments you end up winning in the end. Look it up, it is pretty interesting.
Good luck! |

It will probably go down some more, so continue to put money in and buy as it goes down.
I transferred about $15,000 this week out of my money market and into stocks as they have dipped. Will proabbly do another $10K next week if the trend continues.
I'll probably keep the rest of my money market intact and look at it again in a month. Hopefully stocks will continue to go down and offer us even more great buys.
FYI, I have about 70% of my portfolio in stocks and have absolutely no plans to pull any of that money out of the stock funds. I never sell stock funds when they are going DOWN. |

I dont know what you've got in your portfolio, but if you're only down 6% you've got some really stable stocks, the market is down a lot more than that overall......
I like to do what Jim Kramer recommends, buy good stocks that just delivered strong earnings and still went down just because the whole market was down...if you can manage the risk this is a perfect buying opprotunity for these stocks....
Don't panic...6% isn't bad at all.. |

Sell and stay in cash.
It is not a good idea to hold stocks in a downturn - you never know how low they will go. It doesn't take long (or much) to buy them back. Every new bull market has a new crop of leaders - your stocks may never come back and you will be stuck with dead wood nobody wants and no capital to take advantage of new opportunities. |

If you want to stay in stock market don't pull out. If you want to make more returns follow this forex hedge strategy. You will make 5 times the returns stocks will make you.
