cjtorresg | Should I sell my stock? Or should I buy more of it? |
I am a new investor and purchased a modest amount of stock. Now the stock is dropping consistently. I have always heard the adage "buy low, sell high". My question, then, is: How do I know when to keep buying low or when to sell the stock? |

depends on what type of stocks your had purchased. if the stocks is high quality stocks, it will gain back sooner or later (provided you buy at discounted intrinsic value). buy more is what beffet is doing. but if you bought just any stocks (low quality), you stocks will definitely keep on dropping since the stock itself unable to counter the major selling pressure. |

Each case is different, but experience shows that people who panic sell during downturns wind up losing more money than those who take the long view. So if you think the stock has good long-term prospects, hold it. |

Good question and one that tests your fortitude. If you researched your stocks well and you can look at them today and still see the sound makings of the company you invested in then you should buy more. If you are unsure, just hold. If you look at there numbers and no longer see the wise investment you once made then you need to sell. Sounds simple enough, but somehow it isn't - eotion comes into play.
But times like this, when the market is down, is when money is made. This is part of the buy low, sell high period. We've been in a sell period for a couple of years and we'll be entering a buy period for however long it lasts.
If this money isn't vital to you (and it shouldn't be if you've put it in the market) then it might be a good time for a new investor to learn to weather the storm. At the very least if you start to get cold feet pull out half of the original amount invested and let the rest ride. If the stock continues to lose you won't feel so bad about your loses. If the stock rises again you'll have learned a good lesson. Like I said, it's time like this that test our fortitude. |

if it keeps dropping that is a bad sign, you should do your research into companies you invest in. If you have and you expect the company to maybe win a big new contract or if a possible merger is on the cards that will bring the price back up in which case hold onto the stock you have and maybe buy more. If not cut your losses and get rid before the stock is completely worthless. |

Why are you buying individual stocks? You should be buying stock mutual funds and letting the fund manager do his thing. Please read my profile and email me. I would like to help you. |

A) Do your research (financials, sectors, P/E etc.)
If this company has a solid history and promising future, then yes, keep buying as it drops and you will avg out the price of the stock for higher growth in the future. Right now, everything is pushing down and I suspect it will continue until after Christmas since it will be disappointing because of consumer spending. |

Timing is more difficult than picking the right stocks.
If you think more bad time is coming, then sell now. But if you think recovery is coming, then buy now or stay neutral. It is simple but hard to make a decision on. Your sense and experience are important. |

The market is in a down cycle. If you got the stomach for it, let it ride, you should be alright at the end if you have good stocks. Me I'm a momentum trader more than an investor, so I ride the wave short or long. ANd right now I'm very short the whole market. I'm expecting a few more big drops on the dow, S&P and Nasdaq... |
