People need to get informed before making comments. As was mentioned, Thain came in after the mess got started, and managed to sell off MER to BAC at a time when LEH, one of its peers, was forced into bankruptcy. Anyone that gets angered over this needs to take those two factors into consideration, as he did what seems to be the best he could with the cards he was dealt. However, tens of thousands of MER employees are being eliminated as a result of the merger. It's a tough call, but I definitely think that his demand for a bonus seems awfully self-serving given the situation. And further, how did he arrive at a $10 million amount? I'm still undecided on the situation, but I can surely see where he is coming from, but also where his critics are coming from. Either way, I feel as though $10 million may be a bit hefty, and he seems to be asking a lot. I mean face it, he still has his job and will still bring in a nice bit of change, not something many MER employees will be able to say. For that reason, I feel as though his demanding of a bonus makes me less likely to side with him, and that he should just look around at his position, which is much better than many others, and just sacrifice the bonus for the year, if nothing more than from a symbolic standpoint. It'd be a different story if the board offered him a bonus in my opinion. Just my thoughts.

John Thain was brought in AFTER the mistakes in risk management had already occurred. He plugged the hole in the damn, saved the company from being the next Lehman and saved tens of thousands of jobs for regular "average" people.
The guy should get something.
As for the comment about investors who lost their life savings there are not enough words to explain how the two thoughts are NOT linked. |

JT came into Merrill too late to be blamed for Merrill's specific problems, but in general the high rate of executive bonuses and compensation is a scam that runs through many corporations. Boards are simply buttering their own, and these excesses seem particularly excessive given the state of the economy. |

Yes. He saved the company via the merger into BAC. Further, he came to MER from the NYX where he was a wealth creator for others. He gave up a great job to help MER. He did help the firm to survive in another form. |
