If you know what you are doing stocks are fine, however, given the turbulence of the markets right now, you can get in a lot of financial trouble if you don't know what you are doing. Mutual funds offer you a great deal of diversity and they are professionally managed by someone that knows what they are doing.

I would suggest that if you have to ask which is better, chances are you dont' know enough about the markets to go with stocks on your own. Go with mutual funds or some other managed portfolio type investments like index linked funds or something.

Mutual funds would be better since they have a fund manager to manage them. It's a good time to invest because prices are low. If you have time to wait it out, buy now, the price will rise over the next few years, and you will have made some money.

Stocks are high risk because you are investing in one company, mutual funds contain many stocks, making the investment diversified, so you don't have all of your eggs in one basket. You might have a couple companies doing poorly and many more that are doing well, which means you'd have a better chance at making a profit.

If you have time to monitor stocks and really pay attention than stocks will benefit you because of low costs involved. The downside I usually see when working with people is that they usually let greed take hold and almost think the position will never go back down. If you have a mutual fund you can eliminate your emotions and time and trust a professional. If you find a really good fund management company, than returns will most likely outperform those of indexes. Either way the position will most likely go up. If you decide to go with stocks, stick with solid blue chip companies that have been beaten down for no logical reason, think GE, IBM, etc. If you go with fund, look toward strong families in the stock field such as Hartford, Eaton Vance, Waddell & Reed, Janus, American Funds, Fidelity, Vanguard.

If you are new to stock investing, then I suggest you the mutual fund route. Stock investing directly require some understanding of markets, thorough understading of Company and sector you are going to invest. The chances are you are not likely to beat any of the full time fund managers. Also mutual funds offer diversification thus reducing risk.

Remember in a stock market - "People with money take experience , people with experience take the money "

You can of course invest directly in stock if you love the game of investing and you love learning about companies, business etc.

it depends upon your expertise and time available with you for the purpose. if you have adequate expertise and time to do home work; invest in selected stock. otherwise go for mutual funds if either or both or lacking. god bless you. let us foster healthy investing. have a long term look out. keep next two years or atleast one years cash requirements outside the stock market.

Depends whether you have the time, aptitude, education, and inclination to do it yourself or prefer to hire a manager. Only you would know your capabilities. No one will look out for yourself better than you, but if you don't know what you are doing hire a professional.

I do not see what difference the current market situation would bare on stocks or mutual funds (stocks).

Seems maybe you need a professional.

John
Stocks are better than mutual funds. Only the talented and experienced person can win in stocks(should know very well when to buy or sell shares).

Avoid investing for some more time. The market is likely to come down as the advise of the experts.
