Since we know that stocks give the best return over a 20 year + period, why do so many people avoid them?

Joe
There is data going back to 1802 showing that a diversified portfolio of stocks will always make you money over a 20 year period, even if you had invested a the start of the Great Depression. However, a lot of people are simply unaware of the data. ...and they always have some reason why things are different this time.

Risk. Its always possible to have a string of bad years, like 2000-2002 .

According to my accountant (dear old dad), to invest properly you have to be in for a long haul. Stocks prices and values, along with the market in general, go up and down in cycles. Get in early and stay late. As you look toward your retirement, start planning about 10 years out - begin making decision about moving funds from more risky investments that can yield higher or lower rates to places more stable with a lower return. I'll retire when I'm about 90-13 years old!

People are not informed

They don't realize that THE BIGGEST risk is not investing in the stock market.

Then, the big risk is living TOO long and running out of money.

It's a sad sad situation.

Most people don't think they have enough money to invest in the stock market and not have fluid cash. They also aren't savy about which stocks they may want. For most, the market is too confusing and crooked. But, the bottom line to all of it is...you never know when an idiot is going to live in the White House and slaughter the market and the nation. These last eight years...we've had the worst government ever. Anyone who's a Republican should hide in shame.

The thing to remember is the only thing that drives a stock price up is someone willing to pay a penny more, and like wide on the flipside. The market volatility is driven by emotion (fear and greed) most of the volatility as of late is guided by small investor sentiment. Most institutional investors pulled their money out in mid 07, well at least the good ones. NO ONE LIKE THE THOUGHT OF LOSING MONEY, even if it unrealized.

It's That Guy

In the last few years it's become more and more clear that the stock market is not a fair game. Stock prices are manipulated by companies that market stocks, and insider trading is a big problem. Big institutional investors have a serious advantage over the little guy.

Just during the Bush presidency much corruption in the stock market has been uncovered, but the Republicans don't believe that any reform is necessary.

Also, after the great stock market crash of 1929, controls were implemented to prevent this sort of thing from happening again. Under administrations of both parties, these controls have been eroded almost completely away. The sudden disappearance of big multi-billion-dollar companies like Enron and Worldcom shows this.

Because an individual stock also has a lot of risk, including the possibility of going bankrupt and seeing the price go to zero.
