first pay off ur bills , great return on investment and no risk.

2nd set aside 1000 for 'emergencys' so u don't go into silly debt.

3rd set aside 3- 6 months emergency living funds. cause u will be laid off downsized fired replace etc sooner than u wish.

4th increase ur education in ur field to increase ur income zero risk great ROI.
suggest a reading of 'total money makeover' d.ramsey

now invest the rest.

There are some good books on just this topic. The 'Dummies' series has a new one on investing for beginners which will be published early in 2008 - plenty on the market already, of course, which will give you the basics.

One rule of thumb worth considering (depending on your own position/views) is 'pay off your debts before you start saving'.

Other thing worth thinking about is why and what you want to invest - short, medium or long term? For a specific purpose (eg a holiday)? Income or growth? High, medium or low risk? If you can answer these questions, that narrows the field enormously and should give you a much better idea of where to start.

Hi,
The best solution is to diversify your portfolio. Invest some in stocks, which are of higher risk but grow fast. Invest some in bonds, which grow slowly, but tend to be very stable (assuming you choose the right ones), and put some of your money on gold. Gold is always stable and has been rising steadily.
Things to avoid: Don't invest in mutual funds, they group the bad with the good and you leave it all up to a fund manager. Don't invest in real estate, at least not now in the wake of the whole sub-prime crisis. 5,000 pounds wont go very far in the real estate market anyways. Stay away from commodities and hedge funds, they are very complex and should only by undertaken by professionals.

Whatever you do, don't put all of your money into one thing. Diversify!

Wanna buy some magic beans?
Seriously, it depends how much risk you are prepared to take.
The greater the risk the greater the rewards!

Buy 5 different oeics/unit trusts in an isa wrapper through a discount broker such as hargreaves lansdown.
I am assuming you want to invest the money for the long term.

the best investment in my life was to join http://www.iwantwebsite.com last year. and after that i have got 1000 time more profit from my investment.

Put £3,000 in a no notice Mini Cash ISA and £2,000 in a Maxi ISA, in an S&P 500 index tracking unit trust.

Not only will you be tracking the strongest world economy, but you will also have very low charges and the dollar is is far too cheap and will soon start rising.

And do not forget to write and thank me when counting your profits next year!
