The stock market hasn't crashed since 1987, unless you count the mini crash of 1997?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/October_27,_1997_mini-crash

Russia fell 20% in a day this year and they didn't call that a crash; but that was a crash. Russia is down 80% this year, and they don't call that a crash. I call that liquidation of a stock market.

China is down 60% this year and they didn't call that a crash.

By generally accepted definition, a 20% one day drop might be considered a crash. A prolonged down trend in excess of 20% is a "Bear Market." I would call this market the same as I did back in the .com bust of 2000-2002 - "A sliding crash."

Short of a wild card (no auto bailout, auto BK, ponzi scheme backlash - large liquidation/redemption of more big funds), the market may move sideways until Jan. The market had been trying to rally until year end, but I am not convinced of this rally right now.

I cited on Y!A the week before Thanksgiving (2008) that we could have a 1000-2000 point rally which we are in that range now.

I felt that this would be a technical over sold rally. Fundamentals have not changed significantly. I also said this could be the "mother of all Bear Market" rallies. I don't know yet if this last part if true, we shall see.

I think we'll get through the end of the year, but you will see a lot of retailers start to go out of business after christmas, and this could trigger another down leg as people realize the ramifications this will have for banks through debt and commercial real estate exposure.

The Lemur v1.03
It really depends on whether you believe that at current prices all the bad news about how really bad teh economy is has been priced in. If not, then yah its going to slide some more.

Gem
It is going to continue it's current pattern.

Down 2 or 3 days, up 2 or 3 days.

The rallies are going to keep getting smaller until there is some evidence things are getting better.

I doubt that things are going to get better for a long time.

Sorry.

I think the market will be manipulated to be sideways to mildly higher for the rest of the year. (12/18) I hope I'm wrong because I want to cash in on a few shorts that I mistimed. I don't think we will see much tax selling because many people may have run for the hills and taken the losses already. There might be tax selling at the beginning of the year as people still don't have faith in the market, and held out to catch the Santa Claus rally. Soon after, the retail bankruptcies should start setting in. As goes January, so goes the year.
January may be volatile to the negative. I'm guessing on dropping in February.

again?, it has yet to happen! when it falls ten cer cent in one day and the curbs are in, then it will continue for a week into a freefall

Who knows? There is no answer until it happens. Sure, it looks *likely* that the markets might go down but there's only so far they can go: Pension Funds and Insurance Firms are some of the largest stock owners in the world and they will (usually) always need to buy (as well as sell).

People aren't always rational. It's strange that people rush to the shops when they drop their prices yet they jump ship when stock prices have a 'sale'.

I suggest you read the Intelligent Investor by B Graham. Afterwards, you won't worry about short-term losses (as a lot of irrational investors do), you'll focus on well-priced, long-term securities. Grahams principles did, after all, help Buffet amass $61bn

For this year? i don't see a crash. I could see us revisiting 8k on the dow though. There will be a lot of tax-loss selling in the next few weeks leading up to the new year. So i don't see anyway we'll go up this year.

rustoria617
All this wild stimulating the gov'n is doing will probably keep the market steady for awhile. Don't expect it to top 10,000 tho, and look for a slow slide backward thru middle of next year before a bottom is reached.

Be a long time before it passes 14,000 again. When the "recovery" begins, interest rates and inflation will start to rise. This is always discouraging to the market.

I think in early 2009. Maybe March or April. The dow is in a short term bull run. It bottomed in November at 7,400 and it may even test 10,000 before it tops again.

It may not be a crash day, but like it was in October the stock market will wear many people out.

The government may even add money to the the stock market and the market may not crash, but the dollar will for sure.

Peace and best of luck to you all during this crash
P.S. EVERYONE - Get out of your 401K!
