These are the only requirements you have to meet if you want to buy shares in the UK.

1. You have to be over 18 years old.
2. You have to be able to identify yourself and your address in order to comply with FSA money laundering regulations. Usually this means the bank takes a copy of your passport and a utility bill, but if you don't have one of those other documents can be used. If you have lived in your current house/flat for less than 3 years that may be a problem. However if you already have a bank account and you ask your own bank to help you no further identification should be necessary.
3. The £500 has to be cleared funds sitting in your account. You have to allow the bank to debit the cash when they buy the shares, you can't promise to come in the next day with a cheque.

If you meet all those requirements you should be able to buy any share quoted on the London Stock Exchange - including the ones priced at a few pence each.

It can be a little risky putting all your money into one small share. Have you considered using your £500 to buy some shares in a unit trust (OEIC) instead?
