i'm 17 and have had a job since last year. i have enough money saved so that i know i won't need all of it for anything anytime soon. i want to invest but all i've been taught about stocks is from a high school econ class (not very well at that).

Because you are only investing a couple hundred dollars you might consider using an ETF to gain access to multiple stocks.
The SPY is a great index for the S&P 500 and the QQQQ is a great index for the NASDAQ 100.

Go to The Motley Fool (available online) - Pour over everything you can find. Then make your own decisions. Don't expect to make money overnight and don't expect to make money every time. Building a stock portfolio takes lots of time and education. |

Since you have earned income this year, open a Roth IRA.
Try Fidelity, Price, or Vanguard. Each may have a certain minimum to open an account. Each will allow you to buy stocks, bonds, or mutual funds to your preference. |

You have to pick a good time to buy into the stock market. That's half the game of making money. Had you entered about two months ago during the subprime crisis and picked good stocks, you would have made sick profits. But short of any economic crisis, you just need to find a good time to buy in. That means watching charts, studying trends, watching historical prices, and such, and if you really want a stock tip, go buy JMBA (Jamba Juice). Jamba's clearly expanding their business and they seem to be very popular and they're doing pretty well, and on top of that JMBA got its *** kicked today, so the price is pretty low. Another one I might recommend is Chipotle (CMG) it tripled in value since its IPO and isn't going to stop. But watch it carefully because I don't know what it's going to do next. A third stock I might recommend is Bear Stearns (BSC). With all the hoopla of BSC closing hedge funds and firing hundreds of people its stock has been getting its *** kicked, but it's been on the recovery. BSC should be trading at about $150 but it's been trading at $125-$130, up from $100-$110 a couple months ago.
But I'm not your financial advisor and you need to read up on stock trading and make your own decisions. |

I second the Roth IRA option, I use Scottrade and it couldn't be easier. Call your local branch to get details on setting it up, I can' t remember if there was a minimum balance or not but it is totally free! This is the best post I've read all day. Congrats on having a sharp idea! Fool.com will give you plenty of feedback on stocks to invest in, as stated above. |
