Stocks vs mutal funds?
With mutual funds out there, why would you invest in stock?

Mutual funds charge you a fee for managing your money, which eats into your profits. On top of this, it is a fact that over 75% of mutual funds underperform the market, meaning you would have better luck purchasing an index fund. Stocks give you the ability to construct a portfolio that matches your exact risk tolerance and gives you the potential for much better returns than mutual funds. Basically, mutual funds have so much money under management that they need to invest in a ton of companies, which increases diversification, sometimes to a degree that it actually hurts performance, by making the fund more of an index fund than a mutual fund. If you know what you are doing with stocks, the potential to make much more money is present than it is with mutual funds. Also, mutual fund managers are always paid a percentage of the assets under management, which gives them incentive to recruit more investors, but not to perform to the best of their ability, as they are paid no matter what. This is unlike hedge fund managers that get paid a percentage of the profits they return on investors' capital. This gives mutual fund managers little incentive to perform much better than the market. Just some thoughts, I hope they help.

Best of luck!

As one of your respondents already mentioned, about 75% of all mutual funds under perform the stock market. All of them have management fees and some have sales loads.

Why pay a management fee if the fund is not going to out perform the stock market?

You might consider ETF's. They are basically the same thing as mutual funds, except they have overall lower fees on average. And they are more liquid.

You could also consider a DRIP Plan. This ia a great way to purchase the best Blue Chip Stocks in the country and to take advantage of dollar cost averaging and free dividend reinvestment.

Good Luck

I believe that if you don't have the time to do research or have someone you TRUST do the research, stick with funds. The one major drawback of many funds is the stupidity of the managers-for instance,if you look at many funds they have the majority of the fund invested in 2 sectors:financial stocks and tech stocks-both are absolutely toxic.

Mutual funds are stocks bought by a collective group of individuals and managed for them by a designated person or persons.

I invest in stocks (along with some mutual funds) because: I do not like the percentages most funds invest in certain sectors. Example: A broad based large cap fund would invest X% in financials and Y% in energy. In my opinion, it will be quite awhile before the financial sector get rid of all the junk they have produced and be profitable again. So I want less of my overall protfolio invested in that sector. So I invest new money in other places like energy. I could buy a energy mutual fund but they have most of their money in mega cap global oil companies and I like natural gas distribution and production. So instead of an energy mutual fund, I would buy mid- and small-cap natural gas companies.
Also many of the mutual funds I have looked at have some (in my opinion) very good stocks but they also have some very bad ones. So I just buy the good stocks I like and basically run my own personal fund. Since I am retired, I have the time to do this. For most people, working all day 5 days a week, a mutual fund may very well be a better choice.
