monster5235 | Suze Orman says that you shouldn't put in your 401K/403K after match? |
She said that once the company match is matched (say you put in 5% and they put in 5%), then you shouldn't put any more money in to these tax-free plans, but rather into an after tax Roth IRA. I just feel like this isn't right -- what do you think? I would think you should put in as much as you can afford into the pre-tax funds. |

She's right if that is as much as you can invest. Your best bet is to max out both if you can afford to.
Here's the order:
401K to match:
ROTH IRA max
401K max |

Never mine, what Suz Orman said. You need to max out your 401k first before you put in an IRA. She is not accurate, sometime I am confuse trying to figure out what she was saying. She try me crazy.
Chuck Jaffe, Marketwatch.com, used to have a show call, "Why I hate Suzie Orman?" Even him disagree with Suzie Orman. |

well, if you think abouut it... in investment terms... if you put in say 20 dollars and your company is willing to match you that 20 bucks..you've just doubled your money... but if you put in 30 bucks... and they only put in 20 bucks.. you've already decreased your gain. Go the max that your company will match, that way you are already getting the most for your money. |

It is useful to have both taxable and tax free assets to draw upon in retirement. You will have more control in retirement this way. Typically as we travel through our working years, we climb up the tax brackets, ending up at our highest level just before retirement. IF you retire and your tax braket falls, you will have been best served by investing pre tax vs post tax. If your bracket stays high or somehow rises, you will be best served by post tax vs pre tax. Having both available allows you to have more control from a taxation standpoint. Also, the Roth has certain advantages to intergenerational wealth transfer.
Where one could potentially get hurt with post tax retirement investments is if something radically changes in your tax code. For example, a flat income tax (like Forbes suggested) or dropping income tax altogether in favor of a national sales tax. OUCH.
Suze Orman, however, is a FRAUD. Stop watching her. |

I don't agree with her. I think the Roth IRA is a political scam to take back the tax deductible IRA. They needed to improve tax receipt cash flow and figured this was a good way to do it. With a regular IRA or 401K you are deferring taxes and saving dollars now. Paying taxes down the road with inflated dollars while the previously untaxed dollars grow is a "brainer". And of course you never know if they change the rules for the Roth at some future date and tax it in some way.
Suze Orman show is interesting to watch, but dumbed down to the lowest common denominator for viewers.
I would do the full match and put the balance into a self directed IRA, non Roth. |

I don't totally agree. It depends on your current tax rate vs your future tax rate. If your current tax rate will be higher than your future tax rate, then you should contribute into 401K first. Otherwise, it is the other way around. |

Invest money with the following priority:
401k up to the match amount (free money)
Roth IRA (greatest single investment vehicle available for retirement)
401k / Traditional IRA pre-tax
Traditional IRA post-tax |
|

Always Right
 |
Definitely go with tax-deferred. The Roth IRA seems like a good idea at first, but you never know what your tax situation is going to be like by the time you retire. There is a rather large movement these days that is pushing for the abolition of income tax and the establishment of a national sales tax. You can check it out at www.fairtax.org
But the point is, by putting it in a Roth, you've already paid taxes on it, and you'll never get that money back. And when the income tax is repealed, those of us with tax-free accounts will make out like bandits. |
