Taking my 401K and putting it in an IRA is this a good investment strategy?

The big advantage of the IRA over the 401k is that you have complete control over the IRA. You can select exactly what you want to invest in. Some companies' 401ks do not offer good choices of alternate investments. There have also been instances where changes in investments within 401ks were not made in a timely manner or when desired by the holder of the account.

401Ks and IRAs are similar investment vehicles. It's much more important to understand what the investments are within the 401K or the IRA.

The usual advantage to moving your 401K to an IRA is that you'll have a wider selection of investments. This may or may not be an issue with you in your existing 401K.

If you are leaving the company, that is the only sensible thing to do...but, that is just "procedure", not "strategy". When the choices you have all of a sudden multiply by hundreds...that is when you will learn about " strategy" !! Will you stay wityh the same funds? Look around at similar ones from different fund families? Look into " sectors" that weren't even available in the 401 plan? Much more aggressive funds available to you now...use 'em? ignore 'em ?
...and you thought it was going to be easy....
Good luck!!

It might be. No one is going to match your IRA contributions. And you can defer more into a 401k then you can contribute to an IRA. Also, if you contribute to that IRA you lose the opportunity to roll it back into another 401k or company retirement plan.

an IRA and 401k are the same thing. the reason a 401k is not called an IRA has to do with IRS tax codes (as that is the code the employee retirement plan is under).
transfering it is definitely a good idea. when you do transfer it you are going to see that when you had the 401k with your employer there was only 15-20 funds to choose from...now, you have thousands to choose from. That is because your employer negotiated with the Brokerage to offer a set amount with certain terms in order to get the cheapest rate for them...which isn't mean, as they are also contributing to your 401k too.

hope this helped.
on a side note, if there isn't a lot of money in your 401k, you may want to look at rolling it over into a Roth IRA. there will be an initial tax bill, which may be really low too, but at least this way, when you are planning on pulling the money out Uncle Sam will keep his grubby little hands off your money. Better to pay a small tax bill now, when its the lowest, than a bigger one later, when you can afford it the least.

If you are leaving your company, then it's generally a good idea to roll the 401K to a rollover IRA.

It's not so much an investment strategy (though you will get more choices) as opposed to a management strategy.

If you need access to your money, it's quicker.
If you need to pull some money out to buy a home or pay for school, it's easier and can get you out of the 10% penalty.
If you want to roll some money to a ROTH, it's doable.
