The Fed's bailing out AIG ($85 B) why should the bailouts continue?
It was announced tonight that the Federal Reserve Board is lending as much as $85 bilIion to rescue American International Group.

Who would bailout my little company if I make bad investments? Nobody, that's who.

Additional Details
I agree -- it was necessary to bail out AIG, as well as Fannie Mae, as well as Freddie Mac. But it is time to start holding corporate boards responsible.

I can see Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, because unfortunately
they were a Government Sponsored Enterprise - the government
was not paying attention with this screw up. But I think eventually
Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae should eventually be dissolved.
I don't think AIG should have ever been bailed out - the market
should have just absorbed it and let the chips fall where they
may. Artificial markets have been created thanks to Greenspan
and others and this manipulation of the market is dangerous.
NYC can live with 8000 unemployed people - just ask someone
in Michigan. No one is bailing out people who bought homes that were overpriced that are not worth what they are paying.
Tired of bailing out greedy companies. Since when should we
care about an Insurance Company anyways, their all crooks.

If your little company's failure could cause the entire U.S. economy to fail, they probably would bail you out also. Why didn't they help Lehman Brothers? Must not have been close enough to the prez?

justjosh'n
they said it would be disasterous if aig failed.. and yes its beyond time to hold their rich , greedy tails responsible. and it is sickining isnt it.

Tony H
They will continue bailing out big companies with our hard earned money. As for your little cos., just too bad. Nobody cares. If you can buy corrupt politicians, they will make sure you get help. Wamu is next. Next week there will be more corporations looking for bail outs. BTW, how many millions do these CEO make?

Pogo
AIG is global -- imagine the ramifications. However, if the bridge loan had been given when they asked on Friday, it would have been 30 Billion. The feds don't have their head screwed on tight enough.

the failure of AIG would destroy the US economy

Well I think that the government has a responsibility to bail out AIG because if they don't then 116,000 full time employess would be left out of business. 8,000 of them in the city of New York alone. I'm sorry to say this but your little company wouldn't be bailed out because if it were to go bankrupt it wouldn't screw over anywhere near as many people as if AIG were to go bankrupt. The government wants to protect the economy, and they will only lend money if they believe the consequences of inaction could be catastrophic.
