maxpayne_lhp | Trick question or not? Coupon Bond? |
Problem said Ive just found a 10 percent Coupon Bond that sells for par value. They ask for maturity on this bond.
Well I suppose that means PV= 1000, FV = 1000 (default for this book) YTM = 10% .. Something is missing I am quite confused about the way this problem is worded. Any hints?
Thanks Additional Details Ok to clarify:
"Youve just found a 10% coupon bond on the market that sells for par value. What is the maturity on this bond (Warning: Possible trick question)?"
From essentials of corporate finance by Ross, et al. pg 198 Problem 24 |

Peace of cake. Don't you get it, interest equal YTM will make that bond sell at par value regardless the maturity. Dig the concept for more:

If it is a dated bond then the maturity will be at par on the maturity date. What is the confusion? Might it be undated? |

I would read it that way as far as PV, FV, YTM...
Maturity date or maturity value? There's not enough data there to figure out the maturity date without payment info. If it's asking for maturity value that would make it a trick question...
Edit: Definitely a trick question. Maturity = FV = 1000. |

It is a trick question. If the bond is priced at par, then
coupon rate = current yield = yield to maturity, regardless of the maturity.
Say, if current market interest rates for this type of bonds is 10%, then if the coupon rate is set at 10%, then whatever be the term to maturity, the bond will be selling at par i.e. a 2 year bond, 3 year bond, 5 year bond, etc. all will be selling at par.
Try this in your financial calculator. FV = 1000, PMT = 100
interest rate = 10%, N = 1
computer PV, you will get PV = 1000
change N = 2 or 3 etc, and recompute PV.
you will still get PV = 1000 |

If it is a low quality bond, where 10% is the normal market rate for this quality of bond, then you can't answer the question from the given.
If it is a high quality bond for which 10% is too high or junk where 10% is too low, then the only way it would sell at par is if there was no more accruing, i.e. it matures tomorrow. |

You cant figure out maturity given that information. |

I've tried lots of online coupon sites that either don't get updated on a regular basis or don't have any coupons worth using.
However, I found one great free site where I get loads of free online coupons. There's always hundreds on there from major brands so I save money on my shopping every single week.
You can find the site at http://offto.net/freecoupons/
Hope that info is useful for you. |
