U.S Should stop making pennies?

eliminating the penny would have dire consequences for our economy.

the penny holds a lot of weight when considering the number of transactions a business undertakes in a day/month/quarter/year...

for example suppose the penny did not exist and in one year, that a company makes 15 million transactions, each transaction saving the company 5cents because 8 cents can not be calculated and you can not round up as it would be considered as cooking the books....anyway thats a savings of $750000

now suppose that same 15 million transactions netted 8 cents in savings?? thats 1.2 million or an additonal 60% in cost savings...

So the penny is beneficial for large transactions, regardless of how people may 'value' it on the open market..

We do need pennies :-)

cuz if they got rid of them, stores would round everything up that has a price ending in 1-9 cents, then everything would cost more, even if its just a small increase

Realistically they are not worth anything and should be taken out of circulation.

Cliff
I think they should be taken out of circulation also. I just don't like them - their color, their small worth etc. I don't keep them when I get them.

Don
"a penny saved is a penny earned."

RoVale
I say get rid of them. They're not really worth anything and many end up being tossed onto the sidewalks or in the trash.

Thor
"a penny saved is a penny earned." Is a misquote but it is now in popular culture.

I believe the real quote is by Ben Franklin who was the one that said "A penny found is a penny got".

Inflation is a point. Check the figures but I think a nickle now is worth less than what a penny was worth in 1972.

IOW a penny is no longer worth a "penny". They are so worthless they keep dishes of them by the cash registers.

Another point is that people are not using them. They have jars of them at home.

One more is that we need coinage of all kinds less as we go to all electronic money.

People are already making the decision to not use coins or currency. The culture, technology, is eliminating the need.

Because they JUST DONT MAKE CENTS!
