gemini girl | US Savings Bonds? |
I have some savings bonds I want to cash in. Does anyone know where on line I can look up these bonds to see if they have matured and if so, how much they are worth? |

The US Treasury provides a free calculator for determining the current value of a savings bond at http://www.treasurydirect.gov/BC/SBCPrice
They also have a downloadable tool that you can use to store information about all of your savings bonds on your own computer and automatically update the value of them. It also shows you the date of final maturity. Go here to get it: http://www.treasurydirect.gov/indiv/tools/tools_savingsbondwizard.htm
You do not have to wait for them to mature to cash them in. If you cash them in early, you will get less than face value, but you still get something. Most bonds stop earning interest after either 30 or 40 years, so at that point it makes no sense to hold onto them. Unlike what's stated in one of the answers above, the value can and does go above the face value if you hold them long enough. |

it depends on the series but they are only worth their face value...
you need to hold them for 18 years for them to mature, and they are worth what the figure is on them. when they were purchased they cost one half... in other words, a $500 bond today cost someone $250 to purchase. you can cash them in at any time, but if it's before the 18 years, they will be worth less than face value.
bring them into your bank... they can cash them out for you... |

Go to SavingsBond.gov. The maturity date varies by series, but is 10 years for EE (most common). Even if your bond is mature, it will continue getting 4-5% interest yearly for another 10-20 years past maturity. Check to see how much and how much longer for your particular bond; it may be worth holding on to after maturity. |
