bob b | Visa Stock? |
Visa stock recently came on the market. I was thinking of investing a large sum of money into it since master card is about $228 a share and visa is $65 i expect since they are close compeditors visa will reach about the same as master card. Any thoughts? |

No big lump...buy in comfortable lots... start a position, see how you progress...buy more on " dips" if it moves up.....if we really see a summer rally...add when you see "up" moves on big volume days....
If you think its a long term hold, go about it that way.... if it's more of a trade , then buy on the dips...sell on the "rips",( those same big vol up days) |

The are close competitors, however there are other things that you, as well as others are missing. First off the shares out on the open market are considerably different with Visa have a lot more shares available than Mastercard. The P/E ratio is a little too high as well as the PEG ratio being high. I think that Visa will eventually go to above $100 but I wouldn't expect $200 for a long time.
You may want to wait for the earnings report to come out later this month before you decide to buy. With that said I think Visa is a solid company and if you are investing for the long term you should make a good return, I just wouldn't set my sights on $200+ per share. |

wait for a pullback, right now it's expensive
no MasterCard and Visa are not hurt by credit crunch
they get paid everytime someone swipe the card
it's per transaction, they don't collect anything. |

It is true that Visa and Master Card get paid from processing transactions.
But like many other companies they are still effected by the economy. As the economy continues to sink, discretionary spending will continue to decrease. Witness the slump in March retail sales. The worst in 13 years. That will result in fewer swipes of those cards. Fewer swipes means less revenue.
These stocks are up because they are perceived to be safer than financials, retail, etc. But that run up in share price makes them risky. Poor performance when they report or weak forward guidance will be costly. |

You can't look at price for valuation of a stock!! I am guessing that they do not have the same amount of shares outstanding so looking at price is a bad idea.
I am probably wrong but I feel that the next problem area will be credit cards. People trying to avoid foreclosure will do anything to keep their home including charging everything. Gas is expensive and even my credit card statement is getting higher.
I really liked C as well but I am avoiding credit cards. |

Visa (V) has a current market cap of 53.272 Billion.
MasterCard (MC) has a current market cap of 42.338 Billion.
V is a bigger company but MC is currently a better value. I'd wait for a big pull back closer to the IPO price.
Note: V and MC take NO CREDIT RISK. They simply PROCESS transactions.
It is the card issuers (banks) that take on the credit risk. A lot of people get this confused. |

Take a look at Visa Financial Report and compare it to MasterCard. Visa does not have enough assets to ever compare to MasterCard. Please do not be misinform and follow the hogs who are buying Visa. This stock is incredibly over valued and its running over 50 on speculation that it will fly like MasterCard did. MasterCard still owns over 70% market share over Visa. Do not be misinform. But if you are so motivated to invest in V, dont do all of it. Diversify please. |
