Don't go to a bank. The bank is interested in the 'Bank' - Before investing decide how much risk you are comfortable with. Do your own research and consider tax consequences.
You don't say how much money, many mutual funds will require a minimum amount to open. If you have a company you like, research it.
Don't just look at P/E ratio's,look at debt, look for companies that are buying back their own stock. Speak to a financial adviser, not an insurance agent. Consider Municipal bonds, they tend to be more secure, offer tax advantages but with lower returns (and less risk).
CD's and T-Bills are safe - again less return.
You should also look for fee's and load charges, Insurance agents and banks make a lot of money off of those who don't read the fine print. You have no friends at the bank - they smile because they are getting your money. Fidelity offers many low load and load free plus low fee mutual funds. You can buy some funds from them on line, some of the same funds a banker may charge you a fee (percentage of the sale) to do. Shop around, do your homework, trust no-one's advice if they have something to gain from your purchase.
If you have a 401k, max that out. Read some journals on investing, and if you have no experience at all, wait until you know what to buy.
Impulse decisions can make some people wealthy, but most of those decisions, especially the emotional ones, will cost you. |

I have recently started trading spin-off stocks and have made about 10-20% per/month. I would recommend looking into them. they historically have outperformed the S & P 500 by 10% consistently year after year. thats just by buying all of them though without any research whatsoever. a good way to find them is through yahoo news, the sec.gov website (since they have to register all spin-offs), or go to kinginvestmentgroup.com which offers a list of all spin-offs for the cheapest price I have found on the web. then just do some research and watch your portfolio grow. seriously, it crazy how easy it has been. |

Real estate is usually a pretty good bet. If you're interested in the stock market you might look into exchange traded funds, or ETFs. They're much the same as buying into a mutual fund in that you are buying a several different companies at once so your money is not tied into the fortunes on one specific company. The difference is that ETFs are bought and sold on the stock market just like any other stock and the fees associated with them are usually much smaller than regular mutual funds. |
