Warren Buffet says to buy American and buy now. But what?

In an Op-Ed piece in the NY Times this week Warren Buffet says he's buying, not selling right now, and he's buying American. I love the concept; buy low now, count on a recovery in the long term (a pretty safe bet) and make a nice profit. But he stops short of directing us towards any particular industries. Anyone have any suggestions? (I'm a very novice investor)

Thanks

Warren Buffet is a Democrat. He believes in America and he invests in American companies he understands. Having said that, Warren Buffet has his share of dogs despite trading on the best information on Wall Street (yes, I believe Warren trades on not public information). Warren Buffet is also 78yo and has already set up a trust that controls most of his money.

Personally, I like value stocks with aggressive managements that are market leaders. My top picks are:

Exxon Mobil (NYSE: XOM)
Peabody Coal (NYSE: BTU)
GM (NYSE: GM)
Intel (Nasdaq: INTC)
Western Digital (NYSE: WDC)
Proctor & Gamble (NYSE: PG)
Nestle SA (OTC: NSRGY.PK)
Continental Airlines (NYSE: CAL)

Most of this crises is due to political activity aimed at making you believe only the government can solve it and channel your money into other peoples hands.

I recommend KBR, JPM, INTL and BTU.

The best way to answer this is to see what Warren Buffet is buying in his portfolio. This strategy follows Benjamin Graham's principles of finding companies close to their intrinsic values. Warren would probably stay away from industries however he does like companies that anyone can easily understand the product and mission. Note Warren generally doesn't invest in tech companies - just fundamental companies that will make money!

From Highest to low in % of portfolio:
Coca Cola - (KO) Warren likes to drink coke ;-)
Wells Fargo Bank (WFC)
American Express (AXP)
Procter & Gamble (PG)
Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp (BNI)
Johnson & Johnson (JNJ)
Moody's Corp (MCO)
Wesco Financial Corp (WSC)
US Bancorp (USB)
Anheuser-Busch Companies Inc. (BUD)
ConocoPhillips (CNP)
Washington Post Co (WPO)
Wal-mart (WMT)
USG (USG)
Union Pacific (UNP)
Bank of America (BAC)
Nike (NKE)
Dow Jones & Co (DJ)
WellPoint (WLP)
CostCo (COST)
GE (GE)
United Health
Comcast
CarMax
Iron Mountain
SunTrust
Lowes
Torchmark
Gannett
Sanofi-Aventis
Home Depot
WABCO Holdings Inc.
UPS
Norfolk Southern Corp
Ingersoll-Rand Co. Ltd

Can also invest in Berkshire Hathaway which has all of Warren's investments including Private companies such as See's Candies and GEICO Insurance and Dairy Queen.

there are quite a few that MIGHT be go buys, assuming this in not the beginning of the next great depression.

You might consider among possibilities some that Buffet has a stake in. Among those are

KO he has 200,000,000 shares at last tally.
JNJ 61,000,000 shares
AXP 151,000,000 shares
WMT almost 20,000,000 shares
KFT 138,000,000 shares
IR 5,600,000 shares
USB 68,600,000 shares
BNI 63,700,000 shares

Of these AXP migtht be a bargain.

I really like GOOG now. Buffet would not touch it with a 10 foot pole. He hates tech stocks. I am not particularly fond of them myself, but I am willing to make an exception now and then.

Well there are the car industries, GE, IBM. Spread it around.

You have to keep in mind that Warren Buffett also said he has no expertise in timing the market. And he has no idea where the market will go a few months from now or even a year from now.

He doesn't claim to be better than anyone else at timing the market. Which means you'll have no one to blame but yourself if you buy now and the market goes down another 50%.

Is it a good time to buy? Why would he be correct, he has never traded a market such as this. Do you believe it is a good time to buy because it "feels" right? Those are the questions you must ask yourself.

I however bought for the first time in a while last week (when Warren was buying but didn't tell anyone). Stocks that I bought were stocks that do well in a poor economy. So no stocks for high end products, just low priced consumer products that people need.

if you know what to buy it is the best time to buy..

Buffet says, 'when the world is greedy, beware; but when the world is fearful be greedy'.

He knows what to invest in and he is grabbing them all now so dirt cheap, and he gets preferred shares, and he knows to lock in his huge profits by clauses when he buys a company..
He is doing so great that he is even ready to lend huge sums for the bail out plan.

i don't think his portfolio is in public domain so we do not know what he buys until media makes it public in the news!!
