John K america beware!
Was The Stock-Market Crisis Another Financial Scam?
What a perfect scenario our government created for the wealthy. Create panic and fear - Marks sell-off stocks - Investment firms grab them!

All the makings of another Wall-street scandal.
Additional Details
Yes, the wealthy suffered paper losses but only temporary ones.

There was a scam but it had less to do with the stock market. It had more to do with keeping foreign money in the U.S and falsely propping up the economy to make it look everything is fine. That's why they rushed the bailout so the accountants wouldn't have a chance to uncover the scam. Don't be misled either into believing the banks are losing money, at worst they're breaking even but with the bailout it's all profits.

OK, well then get in there and take advantage of this and get yourself wealthy. If you can see it that clearly, stop complaining and help yourself!

It did create a lot of panic and fear. Especially with the older folks who were getting ready to retire, and hadn't converted their portfolios into less risky allocations.

It seems like a scandal, but I think it was caused by avarice and lack of regulation. We had a bunch of decision makers and so-called experts who didn't understand the fundamentals any better than I do, who convinced average people we could live beyond our means - for years. At some point, like with the dot-com bust (remember when companies that were customizing bowls of cereal you could buy on-line were being funded millions of dollars?), it spiraled out of control, and had to undergo a major correction.

I do not see how this could be a scam for the wealthy when the wealthy are hurting just as much as the poor.

This would not be the first time.
Read your history book.

I guess you can argue that it is a stab at socialism, where the govt comes in and swoops up shares of companies and owns them directly. You can argue that they created the mess to begin with, by devaluing the dollar, poor oversight, and keeping interest rates artificially low, while making home ownership a right, by dictating that credit should be issued to unworthy buyers.

I think that the govt is inept, but am also a bit cynical--the govt is grabbing personal property and gaining tighter control. This is not a democratic process!

There certainly appear to be "favorites"--Lehman was not a favorite, so it was allowed to go bankrupt, while some of the other banks got support and handouts.

The little guy didn't stand a chance.

julia
Interesting, but who knows? that would be pretty disgusting.

edit: combs.. this sort of crisis never affects the wealthy as much as it does the poor. the wealthy become slightly less wealthy - the poor suffer

John, plug your tin foil hat in and think about it. How many greedy corporations, investors and politicians, all holding trillions of dollars of their own money in the markets are going to trick the world and bring them under their control by losing 40 or 50% of everything they own.

Feel kind of silly now, don't ya?
