Not knowing everything about your situation and your time frame, I would give a Roth IRA a try. Let that money sit and work for you in a Vanguard Total Stock Market Index fund [symbol: VTSMX]. This mutual fund can be purchased through Vanguard with a $1000 minimum if purchased for your IRA and can also be purchased outside of Vanguard through various brokerage accounts.
If $1000 is to steep, you can buy an exchange traded fund like Vanguard Total Market Index [symbol: VTI] for any dollar amount and through either Vanguard or other brokerage firms. This could be a better option for you if you dont like the idea of having $1000 sitting in a single fund.
Both of these options give you a chance to match the market with very small fees, lowest in the industry!
For the first time investor, maybe open up an regular account, Roth IRA or BOTH at sharebuilder.com or scottrade.com.
I would put $1000 into the Roth IRA if you dont need this money anytime soon and try to add as much as you can to the IRA every year, so you can have a large chunck of change when you retire or when you buy your first home. This is an excellent way to save money and avoid taxes when you remove the money according to the rules of the IRA. It's probably the best deal going for the youth of America.
Put the other $500 into a money market account at ING or at a brokerage firm and maybe test the stock market, again, depending on yourt time frame and how much money you need liquid.
So, my direct advice is to open an account at a brokerage firm along with a Roth IRA. Place $1000 into the IRA and buy a low-cost mutual fund like VTSMX. Let this money ride and rest assured you are a brilliant person for doing this, smarter than 75% of the rest of us that dont even have retirement accounts.
Then open either a money market account, earning 5% a year at ING, sharebuilder or emmigrantdirect OR open up a regular brokerage account and buy VTI with the additional $500. |

I suggest saving it. EmigrantDirect has the highest savings rate in the country at 5.15%
You'll gain 77.00 in 1 year just by doing nothing with it. |

Give it to a financial planner, tell him/her to invest it for the best return in a timeframe that you decide, and then FORGET THAT IT EXISTS. That way, you won't be looking at it when you want those new rims or whatever. |

Go to your bank and talk to someone who is a professional in banking. Most likely the best and safest idea would be in GIC's or Mutual Funds (but mutual funds have VERY high risk). |

If you would like to like to plan for long term investment, i will recommend buying a no load mutual fund.
1. You can buy a 'star fund' from vanguard.com . Vanguard offers this fund for minimum investment of $1000 and good thing is company happens to be very client friendly (low cost, etc)
I strongly believe that mutual funds should be with long term perspective. Other good option can be buying:
1. a CD from banks like ingdirect.com . There interest are very good and your investment will be fdic insured.
2. you can open a saving accounts with banks like ingdirect.com and emigrant direct.com and earn a great interest rate. |

Put it in interest gaining account at your bank. That way you can get interest for just investing which means more money in your pocket. |

If you want a safe bet on the stock market, put it all in Exxon shares.
It is the strongest oil company and pays good dividends. Before long either the US or Israel will bomb Iran, the price of oil will go up 50% and so will the oil shares and Bush's business profits. Then sell and pocket your gains. But do not forget to write and say thank you Franco. |

|
it depends on if you want to use it within the next year or two .
putting it into a long term cd is a good idea if you don't want to use it soon |
