We are 65 and about to retire. We have lost $200,000 dollars in our mutual funds.?
Would it be wise to withdraw enough money from the fund to purchase our retirement home and not have a mortgage to worry about?

I have about 15 yeras to retirement, so I am not in quite the quandry you are. I heard a financial advisor on Fox last week say something interesting: if you cash out now while the market is down, you have just locked in your loss. Of course, he was talking about people getting out of investing altogether. I would find a professional advisor whom you trust, and ask them to run the numbers. Housing values are low right now, but so are returns on investment, so you need someone to do some professional forecasting. Best luck!

It is always advisable to consult a "certified financial planner" to arrive at a constructive decision. The planner will be able to evaluate your current holdings, asset allocation, underlying securities and your requirements on the course of your retired life. Based on this analysis, he will be able to suggest you whether to withdraw, continue or reallocate these resources else where to get better returns.

Please find a professional to ask advice on this very serious question and serious issue.

The Wall Street Journal and mainstream media have been filled this past week with stories of potential retirees losing a huge amount of their retirements. Its happening all over the country.

Again, please consult a professional finance person.

Barn has good advice. How long would it take to work to put that amount back?
With real estate at historically low prices it would not be a bad idea to purchase a home. I believe many people are of the same mindset and don't trust stocks. If you buy the right property it will probably appreciate faster than the stock market. Plus you will save the borrowing costs. Just be sure to factor in the costs of taking the money as far as your tax liabilities go.
I don't know how you're allocated, how much money you have or what percentage you lost but before reaching retirement people should dial back on the risk and volatility. Also, don't be tempted to take risks to quickly make the money you lost.
You certainly seem to have enough issues to speak to an investment adviser (that works for a fee, not a commission!) or a CPA.

I would wait a little while and let the funds go back up before you withdraw any money. They WILL go back up.

...I can see why you lost your money (asking the Yahoo's on this site is foolish to say the least !!!) Get Professional financial advise... not this bunch of "ding-dongs" !!!
